Phil - Yeah, you could hear that thing above you...on the lower 3 course. Jake's rapid made so much noise that you couldn't hear anything else.

Mike - the qualifier race was open to everyone, thus making it the WPS eligible race. Some of the elite paddlers paddled in it (Holcombe, Calhoun, etc), but most wanted to conserve their energy for the next day.
