YO!  I'm planning on doing a Upper NF canyon trip this evening.  I know it's short notice but if anybody wants to join and can be in INDEX by 4:20 let me know.  Shuttle will be taken care of and should take less than two hours on river.

Sorry for such short notice last night.  Next time I'll try to give a little more head's up notice.

There is still wood in Let's Make a Deal- it spans river left across the middle.  There is a line on the far right next to the bank.  It is in play unless river levels are high (above 12-13k on Sky @ GB).

This run is great fun class IV and with the gate open this year allowing access to the Put In below Drumbeater it ought not be missed.  Fun crashy splashy class IV down to Trout.  The drive around Jacks is still a bit of a hassel but still worth it so long as levels are above 9-10k on main Sky, depending on your tolerance for the paddle out to Index if you didn't place a car at Trout.  Still lots of snow in them thar hills so hopefully we get a couple more good bumps!

I've heard folks have been hitting it lately... so is the gate permanently open now at Jacks??

First, the gate isn't at Jacks but rather a couple miles down the northfork road as you head towards Galena.  The gate has a sign that states:  This gate maybe closed at ANYtime!
So I don't think its a permanant thing, as there are many homeowners up there that would probably prefer the gated community effect.  But I have heard that Forest service is in the process of getting the campground at Troublesome Creek open and that they were talking about putting in a 'new' gate just below that spot.  For now its open and has been for a month or so.  I would guess that if it was a problem for homeowners (ie. breakins) then the gate may go back to it old status as a keyed entry only.  That's just guessing though....

Get it while its good.  Its gonna take a hot day to bring it in and I'd look for 10k as a minimum for great fun!

Also, it maybe possible to run laps up there if more than one vehicle drives in or there's a shuttle driver.  Canyon through rooster tail would make for a great double down or so!

Hey, Mike, I'd LOVE to get back on the N. Fork (it's been years now) but it used to be that summer flows in the 5000-7000 range (main Sky) were perfectly fine there. Has it changed from that?

Lisa,
You certainly could boat the Canyon stretch lower than recommended levels (above 9k).   I'd say below 8k you had better have a car at Trout or just do some laps in the Canyon.
Below Roostertail down through Minefield the river opens up with some braided channels that at lower flows would become boat bashing affairs.  This stretch can comfortable hold a lot of water, and so is really fun at higher flows, but would be quite scrapey at low water.

Good runs on Sat.  I think there was 18 total of us yesterday in the Canyon!  Thats got to be some kinda new record or something.

Anyways, I got an old astral hat here... I'll save it for your next visit.

Good fun for sure, almost went back today. If that hat looks like it was dropped into and retrieved from a forest service porta-potty, it's Jon Crain's.

Great Class IV! 5 laps in two days! Great training ground, including some rescue training. Mr. Harms is a great host and ping pong antagonist.

Foss was a perfect medium on Sunday.

Harms - Thank you for the hospitality! That is definitely my nasty Astral hat. It's my 'wax leather' hat according to Brig (who is terrible at ping pong, no surprise). I'll grab it next time I'm up that way.
