Topic: Thompson - Labor Day (9/2-9/5) Posted: 25 Aug 2005 at 4:53pm |
I think several people have expressed interest in doing the Thompson over Labor day, so I am going to go ahead and get this discussion started. Monday the 5th is, of course, a holiday, so I propose we drive up Friday afternoon and return to Seattle on Monday. There are two camping options as far as I can tell:
The Kumsheen Rafting Resort (Canvas Tents and campsites with meal packages)
http://www.kumsheen.com
Skihist Provincial Park (Campgrounds only)
http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/skihist.htm
I think it would be wise to carpool. I will have room for one additional boater in my vehicle.
By the way, regarding Tom’s poll on this subject – how is it that it gets 52 page views and only 3 votes? And in leveling this complaint, keep in mind that I too didn’t vote, so yes, I am a hypocrite. Either way, The Thompson wins over Squamish by a vote of 2-0.

I'm thinking about going up to the Thompson over that weekend too, but will probably leave Thursday night so that I can paddle on Friday too. If I do go, I'll have room for at least 1, but maybe 2 other paddlers. I'll know for sure by Saturday.
As for Tom's poll...I believe he asked to only vote if you were sure you could go. Since I wasn't 100%, that why I, and probably others didn't vote. Just a guess...

Just so y'all know, the comment about Tom's poll was a vain attempt at humor.

I can leave Friday after work (4ish) and need to be back sometime Monday.
I'd like to bum a ride if possible; I'll pay for gas if you'll haul me and my boat to the river.

I'm in. I'd like a ride as well but am willing to drive if necessary.

I can certainly leave on Thursday, and would like to carpool (my car can comfortably fit one other boater). We need to discuss lodging - I am tempted to go for the pay campsite given they have a hot tub.
Right now, I have had several people tell me they are interested, but would need to leave on Friday, so I expect carpools can be formed on both days.

The place with the hot tub (kumsheen.com) still has room, though we need to book today and tomorrow. They said, on the phone it is $10 per night (I just realized their web site says $19 per night) - either way, this is a good deal for showers, a pool, and a hot tub. They serve breakfast on site as well for an additional charge.
I'd like to call them today with a reservation, so let me know who all is interested.

I really want to do that camping spot, but I just read no pets, so I
might have to look else where. I will call them a bit later to double
check on that.

That sucks...perhaps the will make an exception since we wouldn't be using their canvas tents. If not, there is always the provincial campground.

OK - here is the deal. Kumsheen will not allow pets, but will charge a $10 CAD day use fee for us to use showers, pool, hot tub, etc. The person I spoke to stated that the Skihist Provincial Park is only 2km down the road, so they are fairly close togather. Kumsheen also has a full restaurant for breakfast and dinner. So, I propose we camp at Skihist, and use the facilities at Kumsheen as needed.
Now, I plan to leave Thursday afternoon. I do want to carpool, so someone tell me, am I riding with you, or are you riding with me.

Ok so it sounds like a done deal... Camp at Skihist and Pay day use fees for the facilities which I am totally down for.
As for the carpool situation I am going to be heading up with the same setup as I did last time. Anyone that needs to stick a boat on a car is more than welcome to toss one on top of my rig. As for seating. It is looking slim right now. As brandon can testify the dogs can be a little annoying, but as always I have room for one.
My cell is 206-406-2869 if you want to jump in the car call me.
A BIG SIDE NOTE: If you want to try Climbing out bring shoes I have heard that there is some great bouldering and climbing in this area and I am sure I will try to find some free time when were not boating to dink around on a rock somewhere close by.

What are you talking about...the dogs are great!
How many people are going on Thursday? I'd be fine riding with you, unless I can get someone who wants to ride with me. Anyone?

I'm still looking for carpool partner(s) - leaving Friday, returning Monday.
If you provide the vehicle, I'll pay for gas and drive if necessary.
Anyone interested?

Is anyone else besides James and myself wanting to leave Thursday? With gas prices shooting up, I'd like not ride up myself.
James - no one else has idicated they are leaving Thursday, so I might want to get a ride up with you if you still have room.

Dan and I are leaving around 4pm Friday from the Redmond area. We have room for one more so if you need a ride, let me know.
Leif, James, or whomever might know. What is the plan for Saturday? What time and where should we meet? One thing we might consider is the wind. I've heard that it tends to pick up in the afternoon and that it is a good idea to run the river early (so as not to fight the wind in the flatwater) and then park and play at the frog in the afternoon.

We will be camping at the Skihist Provincial Park http://wlapwww.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/skihist.htm
Let's plan on meeting there whenever folks get in.

By the way, are people planning to eat out (town of Lytton, kumsheen rafting resort), or cook at the camp. In other words, how much grocery shopping should I do on Thursday.

Dan and I are staying at Kumsheen and breakfast is included. As for the other meals, I'm leaning towards cooking at camp. Between the price of gas and camping I should try to save a bit on food.

As for James' comment about climbing, I'm in. I can bring a rope and some extra gear if anyone is interested.

So, there are a few of us that are heading up to the Thompson on Sat morning. We plan to be there at 11:30 am so let me know if y'all are interested in an afternoon run. I know of at least 3 of us that will be there. We have commitments on Monday so we are leaving after a morning run on Sunday.

Butch, I'm not sure what time we are planning to put in Saturday, but I'm sure we will be a the Frog in the afternoon so you can always meet us there. If nothing else we should be able to get a Sunday run in together.
