Topic: Lost River Posted: 31 May 2007 at 8:22am |
Several folks around this forum have talked with us about a Lost trip we had hoped to put together this weekend.
Flows are obviously looking to peak this weekend, so we are deferring the attempt to next weekend. If you are interested in this trip, let me know. We'd love to have anyone interested, though we may need to set a max group size.

I had a high interest until I saw the forcasted flows... that was the indicator for me. Next weekend is certainly something of interest though. I will stay tuned.

yeah, it's tough to get a read on that virtual gauge. but, the peak will be in the next few days and the heat should help clear that pass of snow. Same logistics for next weekend -- get to trailhead fri night and deal with shuttle then up and on the the trail early sat ~4 miles, then 8 miles & out sunday.

If the river is Lost, how are you going to find it?

Good question Dave. The fact is that Slickhorn is the kayaking messiah who will lead us to the promised land of the Lost River.

if there were a boating messiah, would swimming be a sin? or a penance?

As far as I know swimming already is a sin, and the penance has been pretty well defined in previous threads.
Forgive me river, for I have swimmed......

I may be out of town next week, but if not, I'd love to join you. The Lost has been calling my name for many years (Or maybe that's just been my wife yelling at me to get lost. Not sure.) Anyway, with wood + highwater it can be class V survival boating. Havn't heard any wood reports since last fall though. A number of folks have lost their boats up there and had to climb out, or bailed part of the way down. It's a very commiting run. That said, I'd be willing to give her a go (the river, not my wife) any of the next two or three weekends.

Very committing.
This is not your regular roadside run.
There are no "easy" exits from the canyon.
A trail does exist for the LAST 4 miles,
otherwise, the only other is at the put in.
AND that doesn't even go to the river.
I'm sure there are game trails, but if someone were to lose a boat, that would mean a VERY long/rough hike out (or swim).

Thanks Mike, I think that sums it up well. Anyone looking at this trip should realize this is not a place to be in doubt of your skills. Also not a place to try out self-support boating for the first time.
It is nice to see some local boaters interested in self-supporting though -- it's a underrepresented facet of boating in the area.
