This is the Saturday Big Eddy Laps discussion thread. Please post any questions below.

Remember the actual Trip Details are located on the Saturday Big Eddy Laps | Trip Page

Last week was a blast, so let's do it again!  Flows will probably be a little higher, which will push a couple of rapids (RR and Fisherman's) into solid III territory.

Please let me know if you intend to come.

Thanks, John

What time were you thinking? What skill level do you suggest?

Hi Chris,

The meeting time and location can be found at the top of this webpage on the trip header, but here they are again:  12 noon at Big Eddy takeout.

As for skill level, that's a tough call.  The run is listed as Class II or II+, but most beginning paddlers find it to be quite a jump up from say, the Powerhouse or Club Stretch runs.  With flows over 4,000 cfs, I think most folks would also agree that Fisherman's moves into Class III territory and, if you put in at Split Rock, the RR Trestle rapid is also a Class III drop.  (Note: this rapid can be avoided simply by putting in below the trestle.)  Both of these rapids flush out, but you could be in for a long swim if you come out near the top.  On the other hand, Proctor Creek  (toward the end of the run) has a fairly nasty, rententive hole, but most folks don't seem to have any trouble avoiding it.

Bottom line:  if your combat roll is getting fairly reliable in wave trains and swirly water AND you have the ability to recognize and avoid small pourovers on the fly, this is a great practice run to build skills.  But it's not a run for rank beginners, especially not at current levels.

Also, I have no idea what the skill level will be for the overall group.  Last week, we had four paddlers who were solid Class 3+ to 4 in skill and one novice, so we easily could have looked after more novices.  This week, it might turn out to be me and three or four novices... in which case you'll probably get in some extra practice swimming rapids!

John

Sisu-John,

What time were you thinking about running the Index section?

I think I'm going to join Doggievacation-John again on the next section at noon, but would like to get a lap on the upper in before that.

let me know,

S.P.-Jon

SP-Jon,

How about big eddy parking lot at 10am?  I'm pretty flexible for the time. Colin - hope to catch up with you for lap 2.

-- Boulder Drop is more difficult than House or anything on the MM, but you can portage no problem if you decide not to run it. Everything else you are ok at this level if you are comfortable on the MM at medium flows.  (My opinion )

This could be a very stupid question but isn't Boulder drop on the upper section? I am talking about running the easier lower section.

BD is in the upper, and the lower will go fine if you are comfortable on MM.

I wouldn't go as far as saying I am comfortable on the MM but not really worried about anything on it either. I would say I am a born again novice as I haven't paddled in a long time but a novice who is really not intimidated. Well I think I will give it a go, if nothing else swimming is a great work out!

Anyone else concerned about the amount of Johns on this thread? Who has more numbers, the Erics or the Johns?

Fun time paddling with you guys today, SYOTR
