Topic: Favorite Runs? Posted: 21 Aug 2007 at 10:08am |
So, I promised this thread like, a week ago, but I haven't been around the computer much. Stupid rivers... Anyways, females, ladies, women, girls, people of more feminine actions, what are your favorite runs? I'm willing to bet that most women, on PP at least, have a slightly different idea of what makes a run worthwhile, as compared to the guys. List em off! Wenatchee - Leavenworth to Cashmere (especially above 10k) White Salmon - BZ Corners to Husum (Granted, I've been down there a lot lately, but it's got a park 'n huck that I am willing to run!) S. Fork Payette - The Canyon (not to be confuzzled with the Swirly Canyon, this one is class III-IV (IV+) awesome, one of the hardest things I've run.)

Glad you are having fun Ash
My favorite run is still the Wenatchee, followed by the lower White Salmon. I also liked the Cowlitz, it has a really neat Class II "canyon" section, not to be confused with the upper canyon section... I just remember it having beautiful dark stone walls, and a pretty easy line. La Wis Wis campground was where we put in, it was fun stuff.

Yeah, my boat is pink, it's okay to be jealous.

My favorite runs have change over time as I have improved in boating. My first favorite runs were Cabarton section of the North Fork of the Payette, the Staircase section of the South Fork of the Payette (before the floods) and the Alpine section of the Snake River. This year my favorite runs have been the Canyon of the Chilliwack, the Canyon on the Nahatlatch, White Salmon to Hussum and Horseshoe bend on the Nooksack. But these are all runs I have done for the first time this year! I don't know what my favorite run of all time is, because as I keep experiencing new rivers and having a great time.

Ashley, Chilli canyon 2 1/2 weeks ago, Nahatlatch canyon this previous weekend. Upper Ceakamus and Calcheak last weekend. Probably going back to the Nahatlatch this weekend. It was a Blast! Heather

Oh, I also did Peshastin creek a couple of times this year and loved that, too!

My favorite is the Sky. Great scenery, clear blue water, fun boulder gardens, good playspots, what more can you ask for?
Second place is pretty crowded: I like the challenge of Tumwater at low flow, and Peshastin is fun because it's so continuous.
Of course the waves on the Wenatchee can't be beat.
And if we're going out of state: the class 3 section of the Trinity in california is a blast, the South Fork of the American has all kinds of fun play, and Brush Creek at low flow is a rollercoaster ride with class 2 consequences.
So many rivers, so little time....

When are you guys leaving for the 'latch this weekend? I, again, have the entire weekend off.

I have done the Tieton, Wenatchee , Wind, Nahatlatch, Skykomish, Methow, White, Cedar, and Green!
My all time favorite is still the Wenatchee. The Wind was also a blast but I sat comfortably in a raft.
I have spent the better half of this year as a shuttle bunny and would love to get out on the river a little more and improve my skills. My roll is not that great and that is part of my hesitation. I think some pool sessions are in order.

Dan thanks for your contribution!!
For some reason the Sky freaks me out still. It is easily the run I have done the most, but it always gives me pause.... Maybe it's Ambre's bad luck haunting in the back of my mind.
Adam and I have also been on the Trinity River in CA - so beautiful!! I think we ran the 3 section, but it might have been a 2 just below the 3. This Brush Creek sounds interesting... where is it?

We now have our own forum! Feel free to discuss anything you like, as long as it follows the rest of the Professor Paddle rules, stated here... http://professorpaddle.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3And yes, boys, you are allowed. But remember that this is not testosterone-zone. The rest of the site is a better place to declare your masculinity, but feel free to post here.... nicely. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me (or James, of course.) a PM. Happy posting, and more importantly, PADDLING! Let the estrogen-fest begin! Thanks! Ashley Duffus (Forum Moderator... apparently.)
Dan... Are you trying to tell us something by posting in this section of PP?
Hmmmm, I am confused. If we are welcome, and Dan was being very kinder and gentler, why is his manhood in question ???

Every paddler has a river or a rapid that just gets in their head. For a lot of people, its House Rocks or Boulder Drop. Most of the time, the offending river or rapid is not any more challenging or difficult than other stretches the paddler is doing with ease, it's just a mental thing.
Once you start to get apprehensive, you lose focus and you start to paddle defensively. That makes your lines harder to stay on, you start feeling "tippy", you miss eddies, and pretty soon you're just trying to survive. You end up leaning back as you go downstream, that makes your lines even harder to stay on, you start feeling more "tippy", you miss more important eddies, and you end up leaning further back, etc.
It's a vicious cylce that feeds on itself and it all starts with being nervous or scared and apprehensive, losing focus, and paddling defensively.
That doesn't mean you have to be macho or superior; that kind of thing eventually gets you in over your head and primed for a beat-down
What's important is "having your head in the game". That simply means maintaining confidence, knowing your abilities, and being 'mentally ready'. If you're confident, you'll paddle more aggressively (forward in your boat), you'll take more effective strokes, and you'll be focused downstream on your line instead of staring at the stuff in front of your bow.
For me, that confidence comes from scouting a rapid and knowing what line I need to stay on to succeed. I then look at it one move at a time, or maybe one eddy at a time. Can I get to the right place, pointing the right way on the entrance? If yes, can I be sure that I can catch eddy #1? If yes, can I catch eddy #2, and so on all the way to the bottom.
If the answer is 'no' to any of those moves, is there an acceptable plan 'B'? If not, maybe looking for a better line would work, or watching someone run it first, or sometimes walking may be the best option. Don't let anyone pressure you into running something that you aren't ready for mentally.
For many of us, our physical skills are superior to our confidence level. That's a good thing. That may slow down your progress, but it also can prevent the bad swims that kill confidence and set you back.
So, how does one get 'mentally ready'? Hmmm, I'm still trying to figure that one out...

The class 3 section has a rapid called Hell Hole where the river narrows and drops over about a 5-foot ledge and forms a river-hole. It's big and intimidating, but totally flushy. There's usually photographers there in the summer.
Brush Creek is a tributary of the Kern river down in the southern sierras. It's usually low in April before the snowmelt gets going strong.

Ash, I really don't think it will be soon
Between the new baby at home and grad school, my free time has totally disappeared.
My only hope is that after a couple of weeks, I'll get the swing of things with school, and I'll be able to get away to go do the Sky or something close.
