   Topic: Open canoes

You might want to PM Courtney. She does a fair amount of ww canoeing with her husband. You can find her in the memberlist.
There might be a few others lurking around.

I have always wondered where the Open Boaters are at in the NW. I just never see them on the rivers. I think it is awesome and I would dig the chance to start open boating, it's just hard to find folks with the gear. If you know someone with an extra boat and gear gimme a shout and I will join you. As far as finding other Open Boaters goes try giving Courtney or Jimmy a shout. I know they work the open boat but I don't think they go out as often as they used too.

I see lots of them in the spring around the calss II section on the SF of the Snoqualmie.
Other than that Courtney and Jim are the only canoers I know of around here.

Yeah, when we were all out on the Sauk about 5 weeks ago, we saw a group of about 6 or 7 open canoes going down when the Sauk was at 7500 (a nice healthy level). Pretty impressive to see, actually.
In fact, that day I think saw more action on the Sauk than I've ever seen before. 6 or 7 open canoes, 14 kayaks, half a dozen rafts - all putting on at virtually the same time (at random).

Paddletrails is the organized club around Seattle. There are a bunch of class III-IV OC boaters in the club who organize trips year-round. Cheap annual membership gets you a built-in group of paddlers. I was a member last year but just didn't get out there enough to convince myself to renew. But they taught me the basics, and I still love to OC when possible (ie, when there's a canoe available).
It's true that you don't see too many open canoes on rivers out here, but I think that's because most of the canoeists are in Paddletrails and so group on a single river each weekend, that's why there'll be a big pack of them on the Wenatchee one weekend, Sauk the next, and so on. The class IV guys boat on the Green quite a bit in the winter, class II are often on the SF Snoqualmie.

I am certainly an open boater although I don't own one right now.
Deffinitely check out Paddle Trails Canoe Club for more paddlers.
I say stick with the yakers so you got someone to chase down your boat.... or my boat anyways.
SRK picked up Esquif canoes this past year but sold the demo fleet due to lack of interest. They are still a dealer and would probably be open to getting more demo boats if they saw enough enthusiasm.
Just a hunch.

We are down to one whitewater open boat now, a Dagger Quake. I haven't paddled it much this year due to a knee I hurt in the spring which didn't allow me to bend it enough to sit in the saddle. With kids now we mostly stick to our kayaks since we don't get out 3 or 4 days a week like we did once. There are some good whitewater canoers in the area though. When we paddled a lot Courtney could hand roll our quake!
