What's with the ridiculous use of the word "myself" in so many paddling blogs? It appears to be endemic to kayak bloggers. Where did this originate? Why are so many folks using it? Where did these folks learn to write???

Example 1: "Joe Schmoe and myself went for a paddle on the Upper Yough last Sunday."

Example 2 (from a photo caption): "Myself running Spirit Falls."

Hay-soos-freekin-chreesto! A lot of boaters must have been playing hooky and paddling when the grammer lessons were being taught at their elementary schools... Not that playing hooky and paddling are bad of course.

Hey bloggers, try using "I" (example 1) or "me" (example 2). That might actually make you sound somewhat intelligent, or at least half educated, instead of half baked.

Let the flaming begin.

Kyle, go paddle... and get some of that on-water envy out of you.

Kyle, can I get my river knife back before you go any further off the deep end?  It's starts with grammar and then you'll move onto how myself (he he) and other kayakers dress and the vehicles we drive, and then someone ends up hurt.  Or you could join in this weekend paddling somewhere....

Water envy is right, I've only paddled one day in the last three weeks.

My apologies to any "myselfers" out there. I was just looking for a little late night amusement. Truth be told, every time I've seen the dreaded "myself" the boater was paddling something way over my head!

Cronar, I'll call you today about your knife. Did I mention it works very well for cleaning road kill? Are you paddling this weekend?

Honestly, if I post something I am pleased that my second grade grammer teacher isnt online correcting everything from poor grammer to dangling participles.

While I don't really care too much about this, I was just late night rambling when I started this post, communication is important. Isn't that what Professor Paddle is all about? The better our tools, the better we can communicate. Who doesn't want to be better at pretty much anything they do?

OK, time to confess: My mama was an editor for years so I had this stuff drummed into my head from an early age. I suppose most folks don't give a rats ass about grammer or spelling and, for the most part, neither do I. Frankly, I'm not all that good at either so I don't have much of a leg to stand on while I criticize. However, when an error appears so often, it makes me wonder why.

Here's another little irritant I see on boating websites/blogs/chatrooms: "Loose" and "lose".

For inquiring minds, here is how they work:

Loose, as in a boat feels loose when you are surfing. "The Necky Orbit Fish has a much looser hull than the Dagger Kingpin."

Lose, as is I lost something. "I always lose to EJ in the finals."

Or maybe "This loser needs to loosen up regarding grammatical mistakes". But hey, I ain't forcin' ya'll to read this heah crap.

I think it's time to get on the water! My mind is seriously dehydrated.

Yeah, unfortunately you do.

Don't get me wrong, I'm with you 100%  I've got a list of grammatical pet peeves too.

But, I've learned that talking to the on-line community about grammar is like trying to teach a pig to sing.  You simply waste your time and you annoy the pig.

Great point Kyle! and as paddlers that is another aspect of the sport that we all love! Learning from each other and our surroundings. Personaly my grammar and spelling suks...because I did skip out of school that day.

BTW...great forum and site, seems like everyone on here is fired up for paddling and the rain is here!

Kyle, how would you fix the sentence, "while the shuttle was run, I was bored while I waited alone, so I played with myself" ???? Would it be "I and I played with myself, mon" or "yo me juego" ???? Myself is a lovely reflexive word and I stand by it, out of respect for the sport of pocketball.

Myself thinks this thread would have greater credibility if we could all agree on the spelling of GRAMMAR.  (not grammEr)
