Topic: Introduction (and listserv question ?) Posted: 02 Mar 2009 at 8:26pm |
Hello,
my name is Hugo Varotto. Me and my wife (both kayakers)
have moved to the Seattle area last June from Chicago, where we used to
help and teach for the last 5/6 years at the Chicago Whitewater
Association (pool sessions, leading trips, in charge of newsletter
circulation, etc).
We've recently become members of the
Washington Kayak Club and we're looking to get in contact with fellow
whitewater kayakers for paddling opportunities.
Most of our
paddling experience is in the SouthEast (PA, TN, WV) and MidWest (WI).
I'm a solid class III paddler, but due to the move (and a new baby)
haven't paddled since last year, so I'll probably start with a couple
of class II to warm-up.
Also, last Saturday at the Tukwila pool
session a very nice lady whose name I cannot remember (she's fanatic
about kayak surfing) told me that there's a listserv/maillist that I
should subscribe too, where people post e-mails about trips and
meetings. She told me to post a question asking for information
about it in the WKC forum and in Professor Paddle, so if somebody knows about this, could you please
mail me the subscription information ?
Thanks, and hope to see you in the river !
Hugo

Good Move!! I am orriginaly from the midwest and coming out here is the best thing I have ever done. This is the most active forum in the area to find trips and info, so check in often. Welcome to the PNW...
I have 2 lil ones myself and am always interested in family/ paddle oriented outings, so I will keep you in mind when events arise. Your gonna love the water out here!

You should be able to leverage this site to meet up with quite a few kayakers. WKC tends to focus their efforts on sea kayakers (e.g. If you want to joinl a whitewater focused oerganization, join WRRR). The kayakers email thread Sybill runs does get some usage, but I think you will find this site to have some usefull trip planning features.

WRRR ? what is that ? For someone that comes from the MidWest (had to travel 5 hrs at least to get some nice whitewater and 12 for truly paddling great rivers), the number of whitewater trips that the WKC has in their calendar is awesome ! Thanks, Hugo

WRRR is washington recreational river runners.
The few folks in WKC that do whitewater specialize in class II. Honestly, I'd like to see more people post beginner trips on PP. Regardless, PP is your best local resource to meet new boaters and to plan trips. The two email lists floating around (the yahoo group is the other one) are seeing less and less usage, and are mainly used by a few folks that don't want to use PP.
At least now we have a real Hugo in the community. Up until late last year, we were terrorized by some joker posting anonymously as "hugo", stirring things up at every turn.

He's not gone; he just posted the other day.
AND, he took a jab at you.
Maybe we should have an "H1" and "H2" to keep things from getting confusing.

No confusion-- just don't upload a photo of a HOTDOG for your avatar, Hugo Varotto!
and welcome to the PNW!
