Topic: Shoulder Dislocation Question Posted: 13 May 2009 at 11:31pm |
Well finally managed to have it happen.
Anyone w/ experience with this?
Ran a drop and at the bottom the impact popped my shoulder out of place. Put it back in myself and then braced against a wall and it popped out again a couple minutes later. Got it back in place and paddled out.
That was about 2 weeks ago now. For last two weeks everyday my range of movement has increased noticably everyday. One thing that I do notice though is that ocassionally when doing some light exercises I can feel my forearm muscle feels as though it's popping or sort of spasming, nothing too bad but noticeable. Basically it feels as though someone punched my arm incredably hard and I have a dead arm where it's sore just to move around.
Anyone know if this is normal for dislocations even if the rotator cuff isn't torn or is this a sign that it is?
Thanks for the help, anyone know any good exercises to get it up to strength again?
Advice of the day, throw your paddle.

Paul,
I heard about this through the grapevine... Bummer. Not good news et all.
I would have an MRI done if I were you. There are so many different ways a shoulder can be hurt that a professional needs to be involved in my opinion. From what I have been told though, exercise can only help. Exercise being stretches and resistance training, maybe not more big drops aeh!
Good luck, I am still dealing with mine.

Paul,
Go get an MRI and a good surgeon. By good I mean not a automatic cutter but a guy that will honestly assess the injury.
From what i learned, about 85% of dislocations can be successfully treated with physical therapy. The pain in your forearm is odd, but there are allot of nerves that run through your shoulder and they can easily be damaged.
I damaged one and it caused an interior muscle in my shoulder to atrophy, after a nerve study they determined it wasn't permanent.
If you go in for a nerve study, drink heavily before, it hurts like hell.
Good Luck

Paul: I have battle shoulder issues for years. I never had surgery, and regret it. Just when you think things are better, she will pop out again as did mine on 3 occasions. Its been several years (knock on wood) sense I had an issue, but she gives me pain and discomfort daily from the added space forign fluids are tryng to fill in my shoulder. I have a meds regiment of Gluecosomine and ibeprophin daily, but nothing with correct her like a good surgeaon, and don't rush that either once its been cut. My first pop was in 1999 I paddled like a madman for 3 years after before she really tore up on pop 2. Then a few years later a sublocation occured. Discomfort every day!!!!
If nothing else and MRI will tell you if the shoulder is in properly and by setting it yourself, you have a high risk that you may have placed it over nerves and such. Best get it looked at. My shoulder felt the best ever for one week after they pumped it full of the ink solution for the MRI, weird.

Enjoy your contrast shot... gotta love the nice steady hands when the needle breaks the bursa sack!

I am so frickin done with needles. Everytime I go see them I get a cortizone shot and a spectacularly painful steroid shot in my nerve. You should try it, a little slice of heaven there.
My least favorite was the nerve study.
I am a sally, I hate needles.

Big bummer about the shoulder. I had numerous dislocations until I got mine fixed. The final dislocation wouldn't stay in so surgery was the only option. Each dislocation felt like someone had hauled off a punched me in the shoulder hard. I missed a lot of good times paddling because I waited to "heal and stengthen", which it never really did, not strong enough anyhow. The surgery fixed it. So don't wait. If you can afford it find out now what the damage is and fix it. My doctor had done a couple hundred of the kind of operations I required (reattaching capsule to glenoid), didn't even need to see an MRI after seeing the X ray and hearing my shoulder experience. His name is Dr. Richard Kirby, 1600 Jefferson Street, Seattle. Phone 206 325 4464
Good luck.

Same thing happened to me on Sat, minus the big drop. I slipped and fell in the shower. No way I could have got it back in myself I dont think. According to reports it took three people at the emergency room....not that I remember. Had some similar spasming in the upper arm but not for the last few days. Going to a specialist to look into an MRI and some physical therapy. The most important thing I've found is that wiping my ass with my left is a serious propblem. Very messy.
Good luck to both of us.

My shoulder came out in 2007 on Clearwater Creek, and stayed out for 4 hours until they got it back in at the ER. I had a slow recovery, including odd muscle reactions in the arm, but no major tears or surgery. Most people I spoke with said surgery was really only something to consider on the 3rd or 4th dislocation. Now I'm paddling again, though somewhat on guard.
It sounds like you might be in a different boat, with it going out multiple times, sounds pretty loose already.
