Thunder Creek Take 2

A little over a month ago a good friend of mine named Tom Bath started talking about this run called Thunder Creek. He mentioned that there was little to no beta on it and a good chance that it had never been boated. After a good amount of research he had me and a few others chompin at the bit to check out this run. So after weeks of watching we made our way out to scout and boat this little gem. Unfortunately the information about this creek was pretty faulty and what was thought to be a class III-IV creek at around 100 fpm turned into a IV-V Creek at around 200 fpm. Luckily the flows did not cooperate with us and on the second day with over 30% more water and flows around 1500cfs we decided to hike out and come back with less water.

After our defeat I could taste that creek all week. I sat at work pondering the drops I had seen and day dreaming of the day I would go back. Of course I started to plan to get out there ASAP. This time knowing that it was more technical water I called a group of experienced boaters to help form a solid crew.

So on the Sat. Morning Erik Schertzl, Jon Dufay, Chris Tretwold and myself set out on the 5 mile hike to the putin. Along the way I pointed out the different places we scouted but everyone in the group wanted the first exposure to be on the river. So Up we went. At about Mile 4 there is a V+ rapid that you can hear and around mile 4.3 the trail comes to a clearing where you can see the river just 50 feet below the trail. This was the site of our proposed put in on the trip before but this group wanted all the goods so higher we went up to McCallister Creek. Just before the confluence there a healthy canyon we decided to scout before hauling our boats above. As it turned out this canyon packed a V+ series of waterfalls in a tight little gorge. After spending a few minutes looking at this monster sequence of falls we headed back down to our boats to put in below it.

Once on the water we found a short canyon choked<
