  Access

Access is great at the put-in and take out. Scouting from high up on the canyon rim is possible, but somewhat frowned upon due to some of the liability concerns of the PUD. Scouting from the canyon rim can reveal most of the run, but as any class V paddler knows, it is of little use to scout from so high up. Evacuation from this gorge would be extremely difficult, but otherwise once in the canyon, scouting and portaging is possible, provided you can hit your eddies in control to do so.

  Putin Details

The Put-in is immediately below the dam on R. Left. PUD representatives will make sure the gate is unlocked so you can drive right down to the river bank.

  Takeout Details

The Take Out for the first weekend (July 11th & 12th 2009) was at Chelan Falls Park, and this is where the check-in occured as well. Taking Out here involves paddling out onto the Columbia R. for about 2 or 3 hundered yards. There is discussion of taking out upstream at "Powerhouse" Park in the future.

  Other Issues

As kayakers we are under the public eye when we go run this gorge, so it is very important to be professional, mind your conduct, be extra safety conscious, friendly, and polite. We need to treat this as a privilege to be cherished. If you are less than confident in your abilities, please save this run for another time when you are more solid in your abilities. Be a good ambassador and make the kayaking community look good. Boat conservatively in there, as you will be in the spotlight!

  Fun Facts

The locals are incredibly friendly if you give them half a chance.
Bring sunblock, and your short sleeve paddle top! It's nearly always sunny and the water temperatures are above 60 dgrees! It's absolutely beautiful in there, the rocks are not the slightest bit slippery, and there's not so much as a twig of wood to contend with!

   Run Description [Season: Summer]

Just go to AW for your beta on this one, and read it all thoroughly. Then when you show up, if Tom O'Keefe is there, be sure to thank him, because without his hard work, this run would not be open to us.

Other than that, contact the paddlers on this site who've run it.
It's a gem of a run for those with the skills to safely complete it, and look good for all the cameras while they're in there!
