AccessFollow a steep trail down to the river from the east end of the FR 21 bridge. Takeout by climbing a short embankment on river right at the downstream bridge crossing or walk out on river left. The take-out access road has a gate, but it is typically open in the winter. The takeout road is dirt but is in fair condition. It is not a bad idea to bring a saw though, as downed trees may be encountered. |
Putin DetailsTake highway 101 to FR 21 (about 15 miles north of the Quinault River). Head east on FR 21 for about 8 miles until you pass over Matheny River on a fairly high bridge. Park on the upstream R. Right side of the bridge. This is the put in for the lower section, or the takeout for the upper/middle sections. |
Takeout DetailsFrom the put-in, continue on down FR 21 and take the first left (like you were going to the Queets Campground). Take the next left follow the main track down hill for about 3 miles until you reach the bridge (you should pass at least two closed gates on junctions as you head down). |

Other IssuesThis river is often run when the Queets is between 10,000 and 20,000 cfs. There is a rock that can be seen on the south side of the bridge near river right. A good level is when the water is high on this rock, but it is not covered. This run typically takes anywhere from 1-1.5 hours to complete and with the short shuttle, it can be lapped multiple times (2 or 3) in a given day. |
Fun FactsThere is a good car camping spot 100 feet east of the bridge on the right. For more privacy, you can car camp near the takeout, but that area is much smaller. |
Run Description [Season: Winter]---- Submitted by geomorph on 1/2/2012 ----
The lower section flows through two distinct canyons. The first canyon is generally more confined and at higher water becomes one long rapid with sets of small eddies along the margins. At lower water, the rapids become distinct with small pools between them. The rapids are largely class III+ at low water but become solid class IV at higher flows.
At the bottom of the first canyon, the river will widen out considerably and make an easy left bend. Watch for wood in this section and be prepared for a short portage on the left around a large log that came into the reach in 2011.
The first significant rapid in the 2nd canyon is noted by a horizon line with large boulders on the left and right sides of the river. Scouting is difficult. At low to medium flows, the left side of the middle slot may be best. At high flows, the far left is sometimes run (the right slot used to be run at high flows, but it now has wood in it). Avoid the big holes and be prepared for a good hit at the bottom where the canyon turns right and the water all gets pushed left towards the canyon wall.
The next rapid just downstream is similar to the bottom part of the last drop and has a wave/hole at the bottom that you should be prepared for. The next drop (possibly the crux) follows quickly and is run down the middle avoiding the holes below it. From here, the rapids are largely class III+ until you leave the gorge.
From the bottom of the gorge, it is a few hundred yards to the take-out bridge.
