Putin DetailsTo avoid heinous hike to river and utilize and easier put-in as well as more rapids including some good class IV's, a SWEET waterfall, and more, drive from the take out at FR-28 about 7 miles until you reach an obvious triple fork. Here take a left and drive about a hundred yards towards the river and park at the end of the road. It's a thirty second walk to the river from here. |

Other IssuesIf you decide to utilize the upper put-in there are two mandatory portages, first is a sweet waterfall that is choked with wood, and the runout below has tons of wood as well. The lead-in and landing are burly but someone with the right mind could probably do it. Also the second portage around the 30 footer is best done by jumping into the pool and catching boats, it's a hard hike around and you still have to lower boats to do it effectively.
I would say that using the upper put-in makes this a IV-V run, we ran it at 1600 cfs (cispus at yellowjacket) and it was really user friendly and fun, the shoals were a bit scrapey but all the main drops were clean.
Additionally there is a fair amount of annoying portages, wood that blocks the river but is easy to walk around.
The waterfall that you can run though is super fun, I wouldn't recommend going in there if you don't intend to run the falls (portaging would be arduous), otherwise just put-in at Bennett put in.
I wouldn't recommend this run during the winter, I spent a lot of time getting wet (walking in water, helping portage etc.), if it had not been a sunny spring day I would have been cold. (5/15/10)

Run DescriptionIf you use the Upper put-in there is a fun class IV boulder garden right after the put-in, it's directly around the corner.
After that's it's class II and III boogie until you reach the first mandatory portage, lower boats and climb down the left side of the waterfall, there is a small staging eddy to get into boats.
After this there is more boogie until a ugly looking but clean slide/broken ledge with a boulder garden below, run center. It will push you hard left into the wall and you want to be right at the bottom.
Beyond this is the super fun slide into waterfall. Scout from right.
After fun waterfall is the second mandatory portage around 30 footer that lands on a ledge protruding from river left wall. Throw and go is the simplest way. Exit of pool has two fun slides, first is run center second is run on the right.
Now you will be on the yellowjacket run that is in the Bennett book, the first major rapid has lots of wood, potential line down the left, but we portaged right (5/15/10). The rest of the run is straight forward and mostly boat scoutable, use your good judgement.
