Other IssuesThere is a gauge for this run, but many folks still use the stick gauge that's on the bridge just before the confluence with the Selway by Three Rivers Resort. You can get updates during the spring boating season on this blog: http://lochsariver.blogspot.com/ |
Fun FactsMemorial Day weekend is a hoot. Good camping across the river from wilderness gateway (if you like camping with a crowd). |
Run Description [Season: May-July]Big water Idaho fun! This is the lower section of the three most commonly run sections of the Lochsa river. All together, the 3 sections are known as the "dirty 30" as it's close to 30 miles total.
Of the 3 sections, this run has some of the biggest features, but is also cleanest as well. There a many well defined pool drop rapids along the length of this run. Expect big pushy water at all but the lowest levels.
Named rapids include House Wave, Bloody Mary, Grim Reaper, Jones Wave, Lochsa Falls, Pipeline (surf spot), Termination, Split Creek. There's many more, but that's some of the highlights.
FLOWS:
Based on the staff gauge at the confluence (Which is generally 2-3 feet lower than the internet gauge)
0-2 Feet: Low
2-3 Feet: Med-Low
3-6 Feet: Medium
6-8 Feet: Medium-High
8+ Feet: Big to Friggin' Huge - It's been run upwards of 10 feet on the gauge. Expect fast pushy water and huge class 4-5 water at really high flows.
