Fun FactsVery popular steelhead and salmon run. Permits and camps can be hard to get when the run is in. Check fish counts at the Dalles if you want a either a good fishing trip or a less busy run.

Run Description [Season: Year round]This is a great run for beginning rafters. Most of the rapids are very straightforward, and most of the camps have easy landings. An active railway on river left prevents this from beimg a wilderness experience, but there is surprisingly little development between Macks Canyon and the take out.
Most of the rapids are not worth mentioning. Simply read and run.
Within the 3.25 miles you come to Trestle Hole Rapids (class 2+) and Wreck Rapids (class III). After that there is no major rapids until river mile 15.2.
Washout Rapids can have large holes on the right, and rocks on the left. Center left has a clean line. After this rapid the river nature changes. An increasing amount of subsurface rocks and islands start to appear. None of it is hard to navigate, but it does require you to pay attention. The intensity of the rapids also picks up, but none are harder than class III, and all are easy to boat scout.
There are lots of great camps on this stretch. The banks are typically lined with willows. Many camps offer lots of shelter from sun and wind with more open areas behind the trees. Good hammock camping is easy to find, and lots of camps have toilets.
