Fun FactsFantastic multi-day trip. |
Run Description [Season: year round]This is the popular multi-day trip on the Rogue River featuring great views, nice camping, fun whitewater, and da bears. This run can be done in 2 days, but 3 or 4 is more common. Dams higher up in the watershed provide boatable flows into late summer and fall. Be warned too, that at lower water levels especially there is alot of flat water and you'll need to row/paddle alot to put miles behind you.
At the normal summer-fall flows of 1200-4000 most of the rapids on this run are no harder than class III with a few exceptions. A few of the rapids have some pin spots at lower levels that cause problems for gear rafts, so stay alert even in the IIs and IIIs.
The first big challenge comes up just a few miles below Grave Creek: Rainie Falls IV-V. The main falls is pretty burly, although it does get run. There is a narrow "middle chute IV" that can be run as well or you can go for the far right "fish ladder III", which is basically a narrow creek that sneaks around the falls. At low water (under 2000) it's pretty shallow and can be a pain to get loaded rafts down.
After several miles of II/III and plenty of flatwater comes Mule Creek Canyon. This impressive box canyon is over a mile long and contains a few rapids. Most of the rapids are just big swirlies between the canyon walls, but it's not a place you would want to swim with so many undercut walls. Not long after Mule Creek is Blossom Bar, which is the one real class IV on the run. You can get out on the right above Blossom to scout if you like. It's a long boulder garden. At low to medium flows, the usual line is to start out in the right channel which comes to a picket fence of boulders, then the 'move' is to ferry to the right to a far right slot. From there it's just read and run, moving around the boulders. At high water, I understand this becomes burly with lots of big holes.
