  Access

Access isn't bad. Walkin' through the woods with a boat for about 10-15 min. Make sure you catch an eddy upstream of the take out bridge. The closer you get to the confluence, the tougher the options become to leave the river.

  Putin Details

From bridge drive upstream until you reach a fork in the road. Take a RIGHT at fork down towards the river. Park at big grassy area and look for a trail that heads upstream. Walk for 10-15 minutes until you reach a large grassy area (there are two, the second one is what you want). You know your in the right spot because there is a huge drainage culvert in the river on river left.

  Takeout Details

There are two ways to reach the take-out, from Shelton or from Satsop. From Shelton it's shorter and all backish roads, and from Satsop it's more highway.

From Shelton:
Exit 101 at the MATLOCK Rd. exit.
Take a left at the bottom of the off-ramp.
Follow W SHELTON MATLOCK RD for roughly 15 miles, one you see a lake on the right your approaching Matlock.
In Matlock you'll see a corner store and post office, take a right onto W BEEVILLE RD. Follow for roughly 4.5-5 miles.
Take a Right onto KELLY HALL RD, follow for roughly a mile.
At big intersection take a left onto FR 2341
Follow FR 2341 for about a mile park at bridge.

Alternate from Satsop (actually Brady, WA):
Exit at MIDDLE SATSOP RD follow for roughly 7.5 miles.
Take a Right onto MATLOCK BRADY RD, follow for roughly 10 miles
At intersection follow W BEEVILLE RD Follow for roughly 4.5-5 miles.
Take a Right onto KELLY HALL RD, follow for roughly a mile.
At big intersection take a left onto FR 2341
Follow FR 2341 for about a mile park at bridge.

  Other Issues

Wood and lots to go around. Kris Wilson told me this was a fun novelty when it was wood free. It's not so novel anymore. We portaged at least 8 times due to wood. Eddies, sometimes, are "not-quite-one-boat" eddies. LOW volume creeking.

Takeout upstream of bridge or just immediately downstream, nearly underneath if possible. If you blow the eddy your quickly going to commit to running the Fools Canyon section of the Middle Fork Satsop.

Small groups are necessary, when I paddled it with one other person it felt crowded. We paddled it at just under 6,000 cfs on the Satsop @ Satsop guage and it was on the low end of things. Ideally the flow should be double of the flow that was in the creek, but the two wood potrages would be ultra scary with a lot of water.

defiantly a novelty run.

  Fun Facts

LOW volume creeking with plenty of wood and some fresh slides into the river just for fun.

Run Description [Season: heavy winter rains]

The Put-in is most notable because of a large, flat, grassy area, and a large drainage culvert that is in the river on River Left. Also the steepest drops in the run are in the first 1/4 to 1/2 mile of the run. There is also two mandatory portages due to wood

LOW volume class IV creek once a novelty. There are some fun little class IV drops that leave you wanting more of that fun, tight little canyon. More rapids.

jP chines in: "Maybe I've racked up way too many of these experiences, but I'm hard pressed to find anything 'novel' about this run. Just ran it (11/25/2011) and at 5000+ cfs on the Main Satsop, this run was but a trickle. Save the plastic on your boat and your energies for more worthy portages! Can't imagine more water making this significantly enjoyable. My advice? Put in at the bridge above Fool's Canyon and cut to the chase. There is quality water in there just watch out for wood. Baker Creek is the real Fool's Errand here."
