Putin DetailsPut in at the intersection of the FS roads BELOW the canyon. There is good access at a campsite at the confluence of the Hamma Hamma and a small trib creek. You could also use a few hundred metres of lower Jefferson Creek as the put-in shown in the picture but scout it for wood. This would cut out the relatively mellow scenic 2.5 miles above along with the logjam. |
Takeout DetailsFrom the Jefferson Creek bridge travel 2 miles down river and look for a big pile of dirt with a tree that has TO painted on it in blue on your left. If you reach the power lines you went a bit too far. Thanks Hoover! There is an old road that makes for nice hiking down to the river. Going down hill it takes about 15 min. Uphill with a boat takes longer. Find a small creek to get you to the river where the road ends. Make sure to scout your take out as you do not want to go downstream into the underground rock sieved lower lower canyon. We used some orange tape and made a mental note of the eddy and creek. |

Fun FactsSweet little Class 4 minnie canyon! At takeout walk downstream and checkout the waterfall there, at flood it's an impressive feature, and at low to medium flows it's even more impressive because of the manner in which the water flows through the rock. Also while your in the area check out Hamma Hamma falls upstream of the put in, also and impressive bit of hydrology and geology. |
Run Description [Season: rainy/snowmelt]This run is pretty fun! Using the upper put-in below the canyon you will find the Hamma Hamma to be mellow and scenic. After a mile or so you will come to a major logjam that is easily noticed. Take out river left and make the 50 yard portage back to the flow. From here there is a short distance to the confluence with Jefferson Creek. In only a short while the river will take a bend to the left into a stair stepping drop. At the bottom of the drop are two small eddies above a minnie canyon. If you want to scout the class 4 canyon you need to be in control coming out of the stair stepping drop. The minnie canyon is a wild ride with boiling water and some fun gradient. There is good recovery in the washout of the drops. The next significant drop is a short ways down stream and is a vertical ledge of about 4 feet. Scout river right. The water pools up and constricts to a small chute that is the ledge. A good recovery pool is downstream. A short while later you will see the take-out that you previously scouted.
At flood this run is pretty fun. If you had planned on running Jefferson but there is a monstrous amount of water and you don't want to get skunked give this run a try. It's all class III except for the Gorge. At flood it's a class IV series of tongues and reactionary waves moving down stream with speed. The gorge will sneak up on you at this level, there is a wide left hand turn about 4.5 miles into the trip and when you look downstream all you'll see is the river take a sharp right into the gorge. Take out on the right and scout from there, you can follow the rivers edge right down to the gorge and the entire gorge is accessible at river level, you just need to do a bit of exploring to get there. There is a high possibly that wood could get jammed up in gorge. It's not Jefferson Creek but if you've never run it before it's worth checking off the list.
