  Fun Facts

Icicle creek gorge is bigger and badder than the whole rest of the run, scout beforehand if you can.

   Run Description [Season: spring/summer]

My wife and I R-2 from Rock Island to RV (put-in for the Upper section) on 5-29-2012. We portaged 4 times. Two wood portages in the first couple miles, the Gorge Rapid and the Landslide that required the new road to be built. There is a log in the rapid under the bridge at Rock Island campground and I would recommend portaging the landslide on river right. It is preceded by an obvious lake. The stretch below Ida Creek to RV had lots of fun class III. We had a nice medium level and took 2 hours.
DOE gauge: 1700 (https://fortress.wa.gov/ecy/wrx/wrx/flows/station.asp?sta=45B070#block2).
WRFCS: 6' (http://www.nwrfc.noaa.gov/river/station/flowplot/flowplot.cgi?id=ICEW1)

-Jed Hawkes' entry 5.31.12

Icicle creek gorge can sneak up on you, the entrance rapid at the high flows we ran it quickly moves into the main rapid. The entrance takes an abrupt Left hand turn at a big grey headwall. I would recommend stopping and scouting before dropping into this part of the rapid, directly below is a significant rapid that leads into heavy water that feeds into the meat of the drop with a big horizon line. Scout Left. If your going to portage an easy line is down the left, but if your rafting running some of the heavy leading water and catching an eddy on River Right helps cut out some of the work.
