Putin DetailsThere is a pull-out at the DOT station above the "Slides" on HWY2. I havn't checked it out but it appears there is a put in down a vehicle track above the canyon about 360 feet east of schilling creek. It would make the run short and sweet |
Takeout DetailsBest take out is off of White Pine Rd. You can take out near the railroad bridge or continue to the end near the confluence with White Pine. The later take out reduces the amount of flat water on the paddle out and is a sweet camp spot. |

 Wood in the 2nd gorge below Little Tumwater is still there as of 3/31/15, making the run less than ideal. Possibly not even worth the work at this point. The blocking piece necessitates an up-and-around portage that takes 20-30 minutes. After putting back in another log immediately downstream is a quick portage and another limbo after that. Fun FactsScouting the canyon by car, well almost!!!
On the south side of US2 at about the 75.75 mile mark, there is a dirt road which leads to the "Stand by Me" bridge and a path that leads up the river left side of the canyon to the base of Royal Flush. Or you can cross the railway bridge and scout on river right. If you are heading west this is after the 75 mile marker and just after a big pull out keep you eye out as it is coming up on the right (if you start going up hill you went too far). If you are heading west, you will be coming downhill and you will pass Nason Ridge Trailhead. As US2 goes back to one lane, it will be coming up on the left.
You can follow this dirt road and it will lead you too the tracks and then take a right. Keep on going to the bridge and park.
Please use caution turning and pulling out on US2. This is a dangerous highway. |
Run Description [Season: Spring and Summer]This is a great little gem off of US2 that rarely gets run. A beautiful creek that flows east off of Stevens Pass. It starts out with the "Slides" which is a fun set of angled bedrock ledges. This is a good place to check the flow because if it feels big or juicy here than the canyon will be really big and juicy. Right after the Slides is a cool Class III rapid in the darkness of a tunnel and it is not a bad idea to look into the tunnel to make sure there is no wood. There is a pull-out on the east side (downstream) of the railroad tracks but be careful as US2 is dangerous. From here there is a break in action and the pace will eventually pick up as will the canyon walls. Once you see the railroad tracks on the river right, get out to scout the lead in gorge. This series can be throughly scouted and portaged on the right. If the water level is too high or someone is over their head this is the last place you can relatively easily get out of the canyon but you have to go around the tunnel and do the "Stand by Me" walk across the bridge. You will see what I mean... If you want to scout Trivial Pursuit and Royal Flush, the 2 biggest drops, you can walk down the river right side and around the corner. Usually, we will run the lead in gorge and eddy out river right before Trivial Pursuit. Trivial Pursuit has a near vertical right line and a slide left line. After a short pool is Royal Flush which as it drops makes a hard right turn with little room for recovery afterward. You can portage both on the right and put-in below. From here you are in the White Pine Canyon and this is an amazing place. There are a couple nice eddies on the river left to re-group a few hundreds yards after Royal Flush. Enjoy yourself as not many people have been into this canyon and it is a beautiful place. Soon you will see the "Stand by Me" bridge and you will have a super fun time boofing little ledge after ledge to the take out.
Flow:
It is easier to tell what the flow will be like after peak flows and as it the river is dropping. Look for 5,500-6,000cfs @ Peshastin as a good first time level with 5,000-5,500cfs being low (post run-off). 4,500cfs would probably be an ELF level.
One thing to understand about this creek, the Little Wenachee and Whitepine is that the flow takes a full day or two to register on the Peshastin gauge. So if it is melting fast up top, it may be way higher than it appears via the gauges. There is a DOE gauge so we will attempt to get a relative flow (Peshastin/DOE(Nason & Little Wenatchee)
