Fun Facts Great big water run at higher flows. Can be combined with Lower Trout Creek, which is a creek with moderate gradient and a couple of moderately-sized ledges and numerous boulder gardens. Only runs when the Wind is around 8' or higher (put-in gauge).

   Run Description

For my money, this run is one of the best Class IV rivers in the state because of the number of complex rapids. At lower flows it's steep technical boulder gardens. At higher flows (over 6' on the put-in gauge), it was a big-water, pushy Class IV+.

Initiation is a long boogie through a boulder garden. Start center-right and read-and-run. At lower flows, the bottom ledge become a little manky. Left on the left-of-center line is best.

Next, Rams Horn can be run starting center and moving far left at lower flows. At higher flows, stay left all the way. The left entrance ledge is a tongue that wants to push you right, although you want to work left a fraction to avoid getting pushed into the giant hole.

Watch out for the hole near the bottom of Balls to the Wall right: it's sticky, will definitely surf you and hard to surf out the side. However, if you flip, it seems to spit you out. Balls to the Wall left was standard read-and-run.

The last big drop is Climax. At lower flows, boof center or use a boof flake center left. Be careful not to get confused about which ledge is which, as center to center right is a no-go. At higher flows, most people went far right. The center-left boof is still available. Make sure you bank of the left guard rock for your boof, as the right portion of the ledge gets very sticky and is terminal-ish at higher flows.

There is a longish (2-3 miles) Class III run-out, but at higher flows, this river was a ton of fun. The book calls it Class V at high flows, but I would say it wasn't more than IV+. There are definitely Class V lines if you look for them....


Normal level range shown (5-7 feet) are the levels most often boated. It can be run lower, but expect some mank, and can be run higher but expect some big pushy water.
