UPPER GREEN GORGE BLOCKED!!! : About 1-2 miles above the Paradise...

    Author: dave
Subject: 17066
Posted: 12 Apr 2025 at 2:38pm

About 1-2 miles above the Paradise takeout the river left wall has collapsed. This landslide started about 100 feet up the canyon wall and a massive Doug Fir tree was in that wall. This massive tree has crossed the entire river and there is NO WAY OVER OR AROUND IT!

The only way to get around the blockage is to eddy out in a micro eddy on river right, then clamber around the existing log jam, that you are going to be parked in, to get around the end of the massive tree blockage. The only other way out of the river would be to hike back upriver and find an exit trail somewhere. But this is a V shaped canyon section that is mostly impossible to hike out of.

We managed to climb over the old log jam, on river right, and pull our boats through the mud, brush and trees to get over the blockage. This is a bad one folks and if someone is not prepared for this it could end very badly. It is impossible to portage on river left as the landslide debris field is about 50 feet high with no way through or around.

I have never seen anything this bad on the Upper Green before. While it is possible to portage on river right, it is super sketchy and very dangerous, we did so as we had no other options to get down river... and we are bad asses.

Edited by dave - 12 Apr 2025 at 2:53pm
