the recent vintage boats discussion reminded me to post this thread about a couple of sweet vintage ww films I found. I'd be interested to know if anyone has other suggestions of ww porn from yesteryear.

Iceland Whitewater Challenge (1980?): this is a National Geographic film documenting "Iceland Breakthrough" and expedition to descend a class V river from source to sea in Iceland. Highlights include sailing to the put-in from Scotland (!) before hiking up a glacier and rappelling into an ice cave that is the river's source. Extra points for using a Micro-Light airplane for scouting class V sheer-walled gorges and portaging gear around Europe's biggest waterfall.

The next two are from a locally produced TV series in the 60s-70s called Expedition Northwest:

Tumwater Rafting (1978): 1/2 hour tv episode documents the "first descent" (not sure if this is true) of Tumwater in rafts. 3 oar frames run the river at high water. Looked like about what it was last spring around 13000. Highlights include the funkiest original vintage porn soundtrack  I've heard accompanying footage of swamped bucket boats completely out of control and being smashed against the Hwy 2 bank.

Rogue River Kayaking (1978?) this may be of special interest to Kyle K - you may have guided with some of these guys in Galice back when you lived there. This show documents a trip down the Rogue. Highlights include music by Portland 1970's hippie band "Sparrow," (the band actually comes on the trip), and a scene where a guide does an ender in a 14 ft boat. The stern mashes into a boulder and completely crumbles.

I found these vids at Scarecrow in the UD. Exploration Northwest has a couple more river trip episodes: the Alsek and the Grande Ronde, but neither probably has much whitewater action. Other episodes cover everything from hanggliding to turkey hunting. Is there such a thing as hunting porn?

Happy viewing,

GS

Nice finds there Gabe! I'll have to check them out at Scarecrow. That's a cool shop by the way.

I was aquainted with one of the rafters from the Tumwater film. He was a ski patroler at one of the Utah areas, Brighton or Solitude I think, and guided in Cataract for one of the outfitters there. I can't remember his name but he was a character!

I guided on the Rogue during the summers of '73 and '74. By '78 I was down in the Grand Canyon so I missed this Rogue film. I'm guessing it was the folks from Sundance Kayak School. One of the founders of that school was Casey Garland, also the founder and owner of Downstream River Runners here in WA. He's still around and attended Aaron Pruzan's slide show at SRK the other night. Cool guy.

Another vintage kayak porn movie is called "The Edge", which was about all kinds of extreme sports, mid '70's style. It featured a segment on Walt Blackadar in the Grand Canyon. My dad was one of the guides on that trip. It's been years since I've seen it. The crew told me that Dr. Walt, as he was known, carried his boat back up Lava Falls a number of times so he could drop into the giant ledge hole at the top. If you've ever seen that hole at anything less than super high water, you can appreciate how ballsy that was. This was in a 14' glass boat, wearing an old navy issue "Mae West" kapok life jacket. Amazing.

It is Sundance, Kyle. I watched this last week with my friend Dejah, because she wanted to see if her dad was in it (Jonah, still lives down in Galice); turns out he's the short, hairy gear boater in the movie. If I remember right you told me once that your dad lived down the street from him in Galice?

I'd love to see the Blackadar movie, sounds good.
Cheers,

What is vcr? Is that the same as a record? Do vcr fit into a floppy drive? Is vcr the same as a beta minimum? Must have moving pictures in computer.

Hi Gabe,

I think you mean Judo, not Jonah. If that's the case, yes, my dad lived across the street about 100 years away for 20 years. He still has a semi developed lot that might actually be right next to Judo's house, or at least very close.

Judo bought Sundance from the original three guys many years ago. He has since sold it and it's changed hands at least 3 times in the last decade. Not sure who owns it now.

Oh yeah, Judo. His daughters grew up believing he was a pirate.
