Here is a vid of Jeremy and i plopping off of the falls last sun. Jeremy got himself pinned against the bottom on his last freewheel attempt. luckily, he popped up shortly after, and all was ok! |

Yup. Word on the street (the fluid street, that is) is that the sedimentary deposits on the bottom of the river have changed. Specifficly it is more shallow. Now that the stick guage is reading below 1.5', this is coming into play. Last week while guiding I saw a few rafts just DRILL the bottom of the river there when they took their Hussum Hit. A few rafts had been doing it occassionally when there was more water, but not as violently. Junior, a raft guide on the white salmon, went diving there (like, with a tank 'an sh*t). He reported that the bottom of the river was more shallow than in years past. So the presence of the logs has shaped things down there a bit differently some how for sure. After seeing Jeremy's sticky-time under the falls, I'd be hesitant to run Hussum in a pool toy or something, or free-swim it. There's something freshly disturbed down there that nature needs to sort out- maybe by the time 2.5' rolls around on the guage next year, give the highwater a chance to scrub sh*t down there. |

Oh yeah- and I was paddling with Bobby Rhude (spelling?) the other week, and he was paddling a Prijon Fly. Granted he didn't keep his nose up, but I Believe he said he hit the bottom of the river there pretty hard. I think the river was running 1.75' more or less. It's an easy boof, if a delayed one. Just be sure to lift those knees up and don't plug if you're paddling a longboat. |

Here's my Husum Carnage from last weekend. I missed the chicken line and ended up in the front of the raft. We are lucky no one got hurt, but i guess this is why even the guides get down at Husum and why we wear helmets. We get to run waterfalls all the time in kayaks, but as far as your average rafting goes, Husum is pretty unique and a whole lot of fun. I've told my crew to "get down" before, but never practiced the move ahead of time or gotten down myself.    A raft guide welded it and it was back on the seen in just over an hour!

it would appear to be. --And as far as the "Boof Flake" goes, it's been more of a "Boof Block" for over a month. When you hit it you slam onto it like your boofing onto a sidewalk in Arizona or something (very dry). It's also canted towards you like some sort of kicker that Fred Flinstone built for his son to jump on his BMX . I stopped running it weeks ago. Hey Diddle Diddle down over the the Roostertail is fine, but there's some potential chunder if you plug. Very fun if you like bigger moves- those wavewheels were sweet I'd say under 2' on the stick guage, if you want the wet and "safe" route, you should run just slightly left of the line you'd take for the flake, or, block in this case. You can slide down the curtain of water that falls off the left side of the flake, folding into the smaller foam pocket left of the Roostertail. This deposits you right in the eddyline energies just below the flake. Beginners who haven't run a lot of sloping waterfalls around here, could find that a little intimidating, but the line goes really well, it's WET, and you don't have to slam onto that stupid Boof Block. You're just lining up with an eddyline, and eddylines tend to carry you through and away from the sh*t. You also still stay far away from the nastiness of the Left Pocket. That's where the beatdowns occur. I mean, the Boof Flake is fine, but it's not fluid at these low water flows, and boats are a bit too expensive to be cracking open here and there. Using the whole river is great (rocks, wood, air, water- rusty cars- whatever may happen to be there to jib, ect. Just remember, the activity is called whiteWATER kayaking... How's that for a dissertation on Hussum falls?  |
