Yes it's that time of year again. Rumor has it Ms Robe is in great shape and the gnomes are coming out of hibernation.
This year's Robe race will follow the template of years gone past, teams of 2 from T1 to above Magic Carpet. Race date is set for Saturday April 27th, backup date for April 28th, and hail mary backup for the following weekend if flows or weather are unfavorable the first weekend. To ensure maximum participation race flow range is 5.0- to 5.8-ft above or below that we'll look to postpone. Racers should be at the TO at 10am on race day.
Teams are expected to provide their own safety but if non-races are willing to setup at a few key spots that is always appreciated and handsomely rewarded. It also helpful to have timing volunteers to hike into T1 and the finish line.
That's all for now. Happy training and let the smack talking begin...

This sounds awesome. I'm not ready to run Robe but would like to volunteer to help set up. Who do we contact? Can you provide their info?

You could probably just show up the morning of. Or go to face buk (thanks james) and after the .com paste this: /events/154044768095930/ it is the event detail page. You can get in touch with the coordinators there.
Thanks for volunteering.

The only real way to find a champion is to start the race at llama farms and finish it at the take out parking lot.

Every time I visit family something sick happens while I'm gone! I'm heading to Wigston senior's rescue course on the upper taos box the same weekend.
If the race gets defaulted to the hail mary backup weekend I'll be there, otherwise have fun and may the gangsterest paddler win.

This is shaping up to be a great week of kayaking! The 2013 Robe Race is this coming weekend, and per the event organizers we are looking for flows between 5.0 - 5.8 for the race on Saturday. Meeting today at noon for a lap if anyone wants to skip work and paddle :)

Looks like we are getting lucky with the weather this weekend, the Robe Race is on this Saturday, 10am at takeout! Levels look to be around 5.5 for Race day. Sweeeeeet! Get those practice laps in!

Well, ain't enough time for me to get practice laps in, no partner, and no fitness, really. I don't feel like subjecting myself to the extreme rigors of the Robe Race. 30+ min is a long time to go all out through Gnar and flatwater. Makes CC Lewis seem like childs play.
But as of now I plan to be present race day. I'll probably be posted up somewhere fun- somewhere likely to produce carnage. Do a little safety boating. Who else is on that plan for race day?

The graph just updated, and now there is a tall Gnome Hat poking up through Saturday night. I hope it doesn't march forward, or saturday's plans gonna get scrapped!
Those mischievous gnomes are up to their usual antics, it appears!

That's my plan jP, volunteer to set up safety. I'd love to run Robe, not in the race, just run it, but not sure I'm ready. I'm bringing my boat anyway. I'm sure there is something that I can run while I'm up there, but this will be the first time I've been up that way.I'll be at the take out around 10am. By-the-way, I don't get the "gnome" talk. Force said "...the gnomes are coming out of hibernation." You're talking about gnomes jP. Can somebody fill this dork in about the gnomes?

Yeah, They have been ordained to the task of "renovating" Robe Canyon on an ongoing basis. Robe's unstable geomorphology is more dynamic than any whitewater stream I've frequented. Whole rapids can be completely revised by crews of Robe Gnomes. They push rocks and even house sized boulders around, add fu*ker rocks to the approach to your favorite moves, cause landslides, ect. They would be right at home in the mythology of Middle Earth.
Ppeeps should definitely come on out. Anyone who is interested in running it but unsure should show up early, go up toward the put in, and hike into the Old Robe Historical Trail. When you get to the tunnels, scout the first 1/2 mi. Or so. If the drops around the 1st Tunnel (T1, T2, and Last Sunshine) look like exciting fun that you can enjoy, the run should go good for ya. If they look like something stout that you'd likely portage, best to wait and come back. By hiking in for a peak, you can know what you are in for without the commitment. Safer for you, and safer for whoever might lead you. It's got some rowdy drops.
Race Day may not be the best day to tag along though if you want to scout a lot, portage, ect. Those who are solid enough to enjoy verbal beta on the other hand, ought to have a good time.

Interesting note on how rocks get pushed around by the Gnomes.

Yeah- in fact, the Robe Gnomes even thwarted one of the most successful capitalists of American history: John D. Rockefeller.
Rather than undertake the plan put forth by Barlow to build a more expensive route of trestles around Robe Canyon, Rockefeller gambled to run the railroad to Monte Cristo straight through it. The Robe Gnomes upped the ante, and Rockefeller lost. The following years were spend constantly repairing the railway through there, clearing landslide debris and huge woody debris from the railroad grade. In a Granite Falls cafe that's no longer in business I saw a photo of huge 40' trees stuffed into Tunnel #6 (the most upstream tunnel, the one found at the beginning of the run beside T1,T2, and Last Sunshine). That railroad grade is pretty far above the river. Those gnomes can really tear sh*t up.
Eventually, industry gave up and Monte Cristo ceased to be the potential gold rush it was hoped to be. One local prospector I've spoken to at length said that the geology of the area was difficult to mine. Some gold, some silver, but mostly platinum, a metal that they didn't have as much use for then as they do today.

Hello All,
Our panel of water flow researchers are saying levels should hold at 5.8 +/- a small amount on our beloved Robe Canyon run, And so the race goes on! However due to the chance of increasing rains in the afternoon we feel we should move up the time in the morning and really try to get things going. Therefore we would like to have everyone participating in the race to show up at the usual take-out at 9 A.M.
Please spread the word and check in here and on the facebrook page for updates.

ROBE RACE POSTPONED
I've taken an informal but highly scientific poll of potential racers
the general consensus is to postpone the race. Levels are slightly
higher than the recommended race levels and forecast to come up through
the day...At this point the race will be re-scheduled for next weekend
on Saturday May 4th. That being said levels are great for running robe
today so lets meet at 930am at the takeout for some classic western WA
creeking.

Well, keep doing the research. I been watching that over sized gnome hat approaching from over the horizon. Thousands of gnomes assembling like Voltron to make one damn big gnome...
Too far for me to drive to play this fickle game. Had I known it would be "game on" up to 6.2' or so i might show, but usually i'd like to catch it on the downslope of the gnome hat. I'd be nervous, but my Shiva wouldn't be. I guess I'm going to miss my first robe race . (Im out next wknd). Not at all surprised. Its a volitile time or year for flows on the Stilly...
Hit me up if any of u wanna get some (Top) Tye Food.

For some reason professorpaddle wasn't updating on my phone and I didn't see the posts about the race being canceled and I went out there anyway. It definitely wasn't a wasted trip because I now know how to get there, found the take out, the "wtf'' put in, made friends at PacaRanch (some kayaker boat out the eggs), and what not.
But it would be great to connect with some of y'all before I head out next time. Send me your phone number Force, and we'll connect before the next race.

Would if I could, but I can't. Last weekend was my window, so most likely I won't be able to make it.
Anyone who is aspiring to run stuff as difficult as Robe, but maybe not quite ready for whatever reason, should turn out for this unique and awesome event. The most grueling race in the PNW, aside from maybe the LW race. You can hike in the Old Robe Historical Trail, and see the best action just beyond the Tunnel at Last Sunshine. And its looking like great weather.
Come support an event that really ties the local paddling community together.

Would if I could, but I can't. Last weekend was my window, so most likely I won't be able to make it. This will be the first Robe Race I've missed, and I'm bummed. But then again, who knows? If temps get hot, them gnomes may spike the game again. If its postponed again I'll try to make it the following week. But for the sake of anyone racing, I hope yall get to get after it this weekend and be done with it. I know how it can be.

Thanks, you guys. I'm a n00b at this genre but pleased with some of the results. The nature of the sport, and what's difficult to photograph, is the paddle not blocking the face! So many otherwise good shots are no so good because of that. Here are a few more...

That's BROCK? He looks absolutely terrified. But I know him. He is not. He was just racing. Paddling that hard you can end up with some pretty intense facial expresions. Then again, Andrew and Fish look they are out on a serene flatwater stroll on Green Lake or some sh*t.

So have we figured out what rapid the picture of Scott/Andrew is? Hotel California?
The 2013 Robe Race turned out to be another great year. Level was 5.9 after being delayed due to a level of 6.1 the weekend prior. A bit of team shuffling resulted in the top two local racers teaming up: Andrew McEwan and Darren Albright. They laid down a screaming fast time of 25:41. Fish and I came in second with a time of 17:01, I believe Fred Norquist and Eric Parker got third.

I'm a newbie trying to get into sport. Live in bham area. Just wanted to comment on 2013 Robe race. I drove down, walked the robe trail to watch from the sidelines. Perfect timing as I rolled up around 11am, just in time to see the start. The racers made it look ez! Fun! I got to look at some lines and learned a little just from watching! Thanks racers!

he says it was across the river from the people shot (race start) across from a tunnel and its the rapid up stream... that rapid is T-1. those shots dont look like T-1 they look like faceplant but thats too far down stream.... ?? epic perspective !!!

I only took pictures from two location. I walked from the trail head at the road and encountered the first tunnel - tunnel #6 per this - Map Of Robe Canyon Historic Park . Then I went through the tunnel and took those others as you guys passed by again. I don't know the names of the rapids and looked for a map but no luck.

I think this is the entrance to the final sequence in Hotel California. I think the gnarly looking drop is actually the chute you come through after the fader boof river center. You fight right after te chute to end river right over the final ledge hole. The perspective just makes it look alien.

Maybe I'm just dense... but don't you score a higher ranking for a shorter time? 17 is much faster than 25, no?
