Subject: Drysuit Advice?

I'm thinking this is the year that I finally start doing a little winter boating (I'm tired of showing up at the put in in April and realizing how much everyone I went with the previous year has stepped it up!).
So, that means my first dry suit.
NRS is currently having a pretty good sale and I've been checking out the "NRS Inversion" for 500 bucks. http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2251.3&deptid=1174 That seems like a pretty sweet deal to me, but before plunking down my hard-earned green, I thought I'd see if anyone has any experience with this model/brand. Is it good? Bad? Mediocre? Leaky? Not as good as.....?
It has built in drysocks which seems like a good idea to me, but I've been told they're a hassle and tend to start smelling funky before too long. True? Zipper across the chest or the back? I like the front, but I've heard that it's difficult to get it to close the last couple of inches.
Anyway, just thought I'd toss it out and see what advice is out there.

I won't comment on this particular suit as I know nothing about it. I'm a happy Kokatat customer and really like their products.
That said, specifically on the issue of the drysocks, I would not even consider buying a drysuit without the drysocks. The difference in comfort is enormous and I've never noticed an odor problem (yeah, my sh*t doesn't stink either ).

Dave,
How much summer boating did you do? Your trips on the Sky walking BD don't count.

Dave...man, get one with the socks...you do not want your tootsie's to get cold. make sure that it has a zipper for your dong as well. I too am in the market for a drysuit...especially after last weekend.

Jon have you been boating all this time, up north, all winter, participating in the Nooksack swim club, without a drysuit?
Dude, that's messed up!

When I started kayaking I paddled duckies in the winter with a farmer john and a splash top. When I went through guide training I had a FJ, a sweater from the thrift store (I found out later was half cotton) and a rain jacket with a pair of old converse chuck taylor's. I paddled for 7 years without a drysuit. You wussies.

Something about Brett's post reminded me of this...
Monty Python's Flying Circus - "Four Yorkshiremen"
[ from the album Live At Drury Lane, 1974 ]
- The Players:
-
Michael Palin - First Yorkshireman;
Graham Chapman - Second Yorkshireman;
Terry Jones - Third Yorkshireman;
Eric Idle - Fourth Yorkshireman;
- The Scene:
-
Four well-dressed men are sitting together at a vacation resort.
'Farewell to Thee' is played in the background on Hawaiian guitar.
- FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
- Aye, very passable, that, very passable bit of risotto.
- SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
- Nothing like a good glass of Château de Chasselas, eh, Josiah?
- THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
- You're right there, Obadiah.
- FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
- Who'd have thought thirty year ago we'd all be sittin' here drinking Château de Chasselas, eh?
- FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
- In them days we was glad to have the price of a cup o' tea.
- SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
- A cup o' cold tea.
- FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
- Without milk or sugar.
- THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
- Or tea.
- FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
- In a cracked cup, an' all.
- FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
- Oh, we never had a cup. We used to have to drink out of a rolled up newspaper.
- SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
- The best we could manage was to suck on a piece of damp cloth.
- THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
- But you know, we were happy in those days, though we were poor.
- FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
- Because we were poor. My old Dad used to say to me, "Money doesn't buy you happiness, son".
- FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
- Aye, 'e was right.
- FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
- Aye, 'e was.
- FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
- I was happier then and I had nothin'. We used to live in this tiny old house with great big holes in the roof.
- SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
- House! You were lucky to live in a house! We used to live in one
room, all twenty-six of us, no furniture, 'alf the floor was missing,
and we were all 'uddled together in one corner for fear of falling.
- THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
- Eh, you were lucky to have a room! We used to have to live in t' corridor!
- FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
- Oh, we used to dream of livin' in a corridor! Would ha' been a
palace to us. We used to live in an old water tank on a rubbish tip. We
got woke up every morning by having a load of rotting fish dumped all
over us! House? Huh.
- FOURTH YORKSHIREMAN:
- Well, when I say 'house' it was only a hole in the ground covered by a sheet of tarpaulin, but it was a house to us.
- SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
- We were evicted from our 'ole in the ground; we 'ad to go and live in a lake.
- THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
- You were lucky to have a lake! There were a hundred and fifty of us living in t' shoebox in t' middle o' road.
- FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
- Cardboard box?
- THIRD YORKSHIREMAN:
- Aye.
- FIRST YORKSHIREMAN:
- You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a
septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the
paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill,
fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when
we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt.
- SECOND YORKSHIREMAN:
- Luxury. We used to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in
the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of 'ot gravel, work twenty
hour day at mill for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would thrash
us to sleep with a broken bottle, if we were lucky!<

Dave,
I have been using NRS gear for several years now. I'm on my second dry top (NRS), and think that hood dufay is still using the first (or are the gaskets blown yet?).
I don't own an Inversion drysuit, but can only imagine that FOR THE MONEY (u said 500), maybe the best deal around, esp considering the season. I do own a 1k kokatat, and sure, it's nice having a zipper and socks, but shiz, it's kinda ridiculous. I'd gladly pay half for the same coverage (sans socks).
One final note is that NRS does have a rock solid guarantee. I've sent back multiple items on several occasions always with excellent prompt service.
just some thoughts...

Both NRS and Kokatat have great cust. ser. I've always had a Kokatat, nothing else. I have zero complaints.

Over the years, we've had great luck with Kokatat. They hold up well, and Kokatat stands behind their product. Plus, the company gives you a great deal when you need to replace the gaskets.

Alright Mike! Yeah I was wondering what NRS's customer service was like on stuff that had a good chance of needing to be returned (nothing I've bought from them so far has needed to go back). I checked out the Kokatat stuff but can't find anything that seems comparable for that price.
Yeah yeah, I know, you get what you pay for but, I'm thinking that unless I 'ad to go live in a lake, get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night - half an hour before I went to bed, clean the lake wit' me tongue, then paddle back upstream after every run, that maybe, just maybe, the NRS gear might work (assuming of course that I can get a properly sized waterproof dong-sock).

This has got to be the funniest thread I've ever read! Good stuff!
And, about the drysuit, maybe the NRS won't be as dry, or as breathable, or as durable, but it's half the price for krissakes! That's $500 you can spend on other toys. Or beer! Hmmm....that's a lot of beer.
You've just got to decide if that extra performance is worth the bucks.

A lot o great companies out there to choose from and each company will fit each person different, so try on several before you throw down the cash. Get rid of footie funk by drying the suite inside out and once a month, spray the inside with disinfectant sprey, let stand 1 hr, then wipe down with 303.
Price should not come into it, a good dry suite is an investment in your health and safety, plus, if you take care of it, it will last 6+ years. The price of kayak gear is not bad if you look at the outdoor industry. People throw down $600-800 a year on new skis, boots, etc, then they have a powder day and get another pair, oh yah its spring corn season, so back to the end of year sales for some groomers, then lift tickets and the new neon gore-tex shell.......Shall i talk about mt. bikes? or is the point taken. People historicly use their kayak gear a lot longer then other sports gear.
So, stop drinking micro brews and order PBR for a couple months and use that money to buy a guility product that fits you right, not just whats on sale.

Yes mr harms, i still have your top, the neck gasket blew awhile ago, but the duct tape is holding up great! anyways, dave, get the socks and zippers, (besides, if you don't get the relief zipper, no lawn fertilizing company in the world is going to want to take off your pfd, spray skirt and dry suit just to get to the goods! shit man, make it easy on them)

Jon, yeah, thought so...
There's way too much product pushing here. Now I will be the first to admit that I'm no ol' school paddler, but the roots are there somewhere's, and I can still recall my favorite old Jerome (was still paddling the Ranch over 70yrs of age [no kidding, making him my hero])and he would duct tape his helmet before buying a new one.
Brett, you wear a Kokatat dry suit because it smells good new and you get a prorated deal (at whole sale?) which of course makes it cost less than $1000. Have you traded in last years suit yet?.

Huckin',
I get the gear I have because it performs the best and the cust. serv. is the best. I don't care how much it costs. I don't want to get in trouble somewhere because my gear fails. btw anybody can become a raft guide ;)
