Kayak the Grand Canyon with Small World Adventures August 8th-21st, 2010!
Hey Everyone,
I’m writing to tempt you a little bit to join our Grand Canyon trip this summer. In August, when your home rivers have most likely dried up, we invite you to come experience the rush of famous rapids like Lava, Crystal and Hermit for yourself. And, even though there are tons of awesome rapids in the Grand Canyon, it's not just about the whitewater—you'll get to frolic in refreshing side creeks like Havasu, Deer Creek and Matkatamiba and you’ll see amazing geological wonders as you travel through 243 miles of incredible canyon scenery. After 14 days in the majestic Grand Canyon, you’ll come away with a fresh perspective on life.
If 2 weeks of vacationing on the Colorado River sounds appealing to you, now's the time to get your deposit in to secure your spot on the trip—time is running short. Moki Mac only requires a $200 deposit so if you know you want to come, make your reservation ASAP before we fill the trip. Space is limited so don't waste any time.
http://smallworldadventures.cmail5.com/t/y/i/oniyl/l/r - Small World’s trip dates are August 8th-21st and Moki Mac has offered an extension on 2009's price ($3630 per person) if you sign up before March 15th. So, sign up now, and save yourself some money!
Don Beveridge will be the kayak guide and he’ll be there to show you sweet lines through the rapids and all the best play spots as you boat down one of the most amazing rivers in this world.
Larry is running the trip and will be rowing a raft (or a dory). If any of you have any non-paddling friends or family who want to join you on the trip of a lifetime, bring them along! It’s an incredible vacation for everyone to enjoy together.

Here is all the logistical information you should need, and please mailto:info@smallworldadventures.com - let me know if you have any questions: Q&A for the August 8th-21st, 2010 SWA / Moki Mac Grand Canyon trip
1. When do we need to be there? About 5:00pm on August 7, 2010 for an orientation. We meet at the Marble Canyon Lodge, which is about 10 miles from Lee’s ferry, and most people stay the night at the lodge.
2. If I am not a kayaker, can I go? Of course! We plan on having 3 dories and/or rafts along as well as kayakers. If riding in a dory or raft you need no previous experience since Moki Mac boatmen do all the maneuvering of these crafts. Kayakers should be class IV paddlers or at least strong class III+ paddlers with a very strong roll. Please contact
mailto:info@smallworldadventures.com - SWA to confirm your kayak skills.
3. Should I drive or fly? This depends: If you are a kayaker and live at all nearby then driving makes sense to get your boat and gear there and back. If you need to fly talk to SWA about options for us to bring a boat for you to rent, or shipping one. If you want to fly, Moki Mac can advise you about reservations from and returning to Las Vegas.
4. Who shuttles my car if I drive? There is a service run by a guy named Norm Montgomery 1 (928) 564-2391 who will pick your car up at the put in and leave it at a secure location and bring it down to the take out the morning of the take-out. In 2009, he charged $235 per vehicle. You can check out his website at http://smallworldadventures.cmail5.com/t/y/i/oniyl/l/y - www.rrshuttleservice.com
5. When do we get off the river? We take out at South Cove on Lake Mead on August 21st about 9:30am. A shuttle bus or van will take you to Las Vegas to catch your flight if you have chosen this option with Moki Mac.
6. What do I need to bring? Moki Mac will give you a general packing list and I will send out a list for kayaking gear. They provide dry bags but you can bring your own if you prefer. General river and camping gear is all that is required.
7. Who do I talk to at Moki Mac? Richard and Annie Quist. It's a family owned and run company and their brother Clair runs the Grand Canyon operation, while Richard and Annie run the main office. Check out their website at http://smallworldadventures.cmail5.com/t/y/i/oniyl/l/j - www.mokimac.com or call them at 1-800-284-7280
 8. What if I can only do the upper or lower half of the trip? At this point we are trying to get people who can do the entire trip, but we do have 3 spaces available for the upper part of the river only. This means putting in at Lee's Ferry and hiking out at Phantom Ranch. Ask us for more details.
9. Do I need to kayak the entire trip? Kayakers should go into the trip planning on kayaking the whole thing. But there is space in the raft or dory if you want or need to hop out for a bit. There is not space for all the kayaks on the cargo raft so most of us need to kayak most of the time. On past trips like this almost everyone kayaked the whole way.
10. Do I need to bring extra gear? SWA will bring spare paddles and have a spare skirt, helmet, dry top and assorted little accessories.
11. Who leads the trip? One of Moki Mac's boatmen. They have an incredible amount of experience and decide on the camps, hikes, lunch spots and pretty much everything else. Don Beveridge will be the kayak guide and is there to show the kayakers fun lines, and, more importantly, fun play spots.
12. How often do we scout? Not very often since we know the river very well and it is a pretty easy river to follow on. Once you get the hang of the Colorado you realize that in most rapids you enter down the tongue and break to one side or just run the big waves down the middle. We typically only need to scout 3 rapids-Hance, Crystal, and Lava.
13. Who does the work at camp? Mostly Moki Mac boatmen. They will cook the meals, be sure there is water and lemonade to drink all the time, clean the pots and pans and rig the rafts. The kayakers and rafters need to help unload the boats at camp, make their personal camp, wash there own plate, mug and utensils and stock there own beer in the drag bag to cool it down.
 14. Is there any pre trip packing to do? Not really. You need to get your own camping gear together, or rent it from Moki Mac. If you are a kayaker you need to be sure to bring equipment and river clothing in good repair. The Moki Mac boatmen plan and pack all the food, kitchen items and rafting equipment.
15. Is 14 days enough time to travel 243 miles? You could always stand to spend more time in the Canyon but since the trip is so well organized 14 days is plenty of time. We start pretty early in the day and keep moving on the water so we have time for lots of hikes.
16. How much beer can I bring? The short answer is 'however much you will drink'. If you want to bring wine please buy box wine and put liquor in plastic bottles.
17. When should I sign up? As soon as you know you want to go. This trip will probably only have sixteen participants so the spots will fill up quickly.
18. How much does it cost? The 2010 trip cost $3743, but if you sign up before March 15th, Moki Mac will give you the 2009 price of $3630. If you are flying to and from Las Vegas, then you will also need to get from Vegas to Marble Canyon on August 7th. The flight from Vegas to Marble Canyon (the put in) is about $230. Contact mailto:info@mokimac.com - Moki Mac for info on booking this. OR...Moki Mac is offering free ground transportation from Las Vegas to Marble Canyon to take place the day prior to the river trip launch-August 7th (the same day you would need to fly to Marble if you choose that option). You just need to be in Vegas in time for a 1:00PM pick up at McCarran International Airport. Meeting location is Level "0" (ground level) located directly under the baggage claim area at the east end of the terminal. Please let Moki Mac know if you will take advantage of this offer. They will make all the arrangements. The drive to Marble Canyon will take about 4 1/2 hours. The river portion of the trip includes all food, rafting equipment and guides. Extras expenses not covered would be transportation to Marble canyon, hotel or camping at Marble Canyon, drinks and tips.
We hope you will consider joining us for this trip of a lifetime! If you have any other questions mailto:info@smallworldadventures.com - let me know , or you can make your reservation directly with Moki Mac mailto:mokimac@mokimac.com - mokimac@mokimac.com or 1-800-284-7280
