I'm looking to race the NW adventure sports triathlon on May 7th in port Gamble which involves a 6mile paddle followed by mtn biking and trail running. I was looking through pictures and noticing that everyone seems to use sea kayaks. I think my burn would be a bit slow for this type of race. I was wondering if anyone on here had a sea kayak or similar boat that I might be able to borrow for the race? I would happily trade beer for a weekend with your boat or we could work out something else. Thanks in advance. Adam |

yeah, a sea kayak would do- but try to find a narrow one that is 17 or 18'. A lot of sea kayaks are excessively wide and therefore slower. I'd try to find something 21 or 22" wide.

You can rent a fast boat from the Kayak Academy. I would paddle one for a least a day or two before the race so you get used to it. ------------- Nomad |

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll look into rentals but saving money is always nice. Dave, how does your Looksha paddle with one person? |

I don't know how it would paddle solo. I've never tried it. It is quite the beast. The boat weighs 92lbs and like JP suggested, mine is a bit of a pig, due to being wide enough for the general public to be able to paddle it without flipping over.
It just struck me as funny it being a racing boat. If you can find a good one, there are boats out there that are probably literally twice as fast as mine. There's nothing quite like paddling glass. |

You could use my Necky Chatham 16. It's faster than the Looksha but not really a speed demon. Easy enough to hold about a 4 knot pace if you be in shape. Like JP said, longer and narrow is better in the seaboat department. Mine is a rock garden type boat, hence not being fast.

| Thanks everyone for the offers and ideas. Unfortunately the race is being bagged for me. I promised to take the girl out camping and its supposed to rain all weekend in port gamble. I was hoping I could do both (could have without the rain) so instead we're going to head somewhere dry. I'm looking for rivers right now. Maybe I'll see you out there. |

These guys have a collection of some of the the fastest flat water boats around. They have used and demo boats....a good resource. The daily demo rate seems a little steep at $20, but to paddle a $3000 race boat, it's not really that much. Jim |
