how do you get trapped in a kayak oven? Not trying to be callous but how is that part of the boatmaking process? Cleaning it out or something?

sh*tty way to die that's for sure.

Oven's bake the molds which form the boats. Basically the most required part of boat making. Really considering the size of these ovens and the way the molds are hoisted in and out I could see several potentials for injury or death. It could have been something as simple as a mold getting stuck and poor communication. Maybe he yelled at the winch operator, hey I need to run in here and get a burn....

You'd think there would a kill switch inside the oven enclosure. It's a pretty simple fix to a very real hazard.

Definitely not pleasant to think about what that guy went through before he finally succumbed.

You can't have a kill switch inside the mold, because it would would then be molded into the kayak hull. You could have the worker carry an emergency stop on his body, which could either be attached to a cable, or radio transmitted. The best thing to do is for it to be required to install a door jamb (bar bolted from one half of the mold to the either so it physically can't close) before anyone is allowed into a mold. Fire anyone one that breaks that rule.
