Dispatchers learned about 3 p.m. via a satellite phone call that Jennifer Watson, 38, was receiving CPR after her kayak had overturned, said Skamania County Undersheriff Dave Cox.

She was pronounced dead about three hours later. A high-angle team from Wind River Search and Rescue, and the Clark County Technical Rescue Team were sent to retrieve her body in rugged terrain and steep cliffs.

Incident occurred at the bottom of S-Turn where there is a badly undercut wall with a lava tube that the current flows into.  The boater went into the lave tube, after flipping in the bottom hole on the left.  It's a very short distance to the wall.  If you flip in the hole, you're into the wall quick.

Folks tried to reach her with a rope, and then did a risky live bait rescue.  911 was called and the group was told a chopper was dispatched.  CPR was performed by the group for 2 hours waiting for the helicopter.  When the helicopter didn't show the group undertook the huge effort to get the body out of the canyon.  S&R met the group at the top near the road.  Nothing but respect for that crew and what they dealt with.

My thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends.

There's a nice tribute to Jen Watson by one of her friends on the Team Pyranha blog.  Something I think most paddlers can relate to.  Link is here:

It's all fun and games until someone loses a paddle.
