Anyone ever flown with their playboat and paddle and not been charged anything for it? I met a guy on the chee over at PP ball named Josh, who lived up here but now lives in Cali. Anyone know him? He flew Alaska Airlines with no outrageous baggage fees. I believe with a Jackson RockStar S.

that was me... and i wasn't charged on the way back either.   had the boat in a salamander kayak bag and tossed a bunch of gear in there too. just kept everything under 50 pounds.    The paddle was in an nrs paddle bag.    i've got status on alaska, so maybe that helped... pretty easy really.

I've had similar experiences flying out of Seattle with Alaskan.
Package the boat up well, including a carrying strap. Keep the weight below 50 lbs. Pay for number of bags including the kayak before you drop it off at baggage...both times I did this they just took it without commenting on the fact that it was oversize.

I've paid an oversize fee on Frontier in the past, but it wasn't that bad, I think an extra $20 or 30 over the baggage fee.

I was just looking at this yesterday. My brother is flying in on frontier and out on alaska. Looking at both of their oversize fees it looks like its going to be really expensive but it sounds like you had better experiences. Did you guys contact the airlines before hand or just show up?

Have you heard of anyone getting burned by the airlines? (like getting charged huge fees at the airport or refused entry)

how long ago did you guys fly?
