Happy New Year everyone! Before we move on to this year though, allow me to review the previous one and request same from y'all! I know there are some people out there who had some stellar paddling years and got on some unbelievable Personal First Descents. Here's what my logbook says:
Days OTR: 47 (Boo-hiss)
Personal first descents: 6
Mashel River (Upper)
Deer Creek
Illinois River (playboat)
Sloan Creek (@NF Sauk)
Wind River (Lower Waterfall Reach)
NF Payette (Top to bottom; one portage)
Gonna be tough for me to top that one for difficulty, so maybe this year quantity will be the fashion!
Let's see what you guys were up to last year....

-Handfull of dawn-patrol runs on the MM -One day on the Green. -Lots of laps on FITW -One day on the Cooper. -Return to the Beaver River in upstate NY for my fourth "Beaverfest" -One day on the Sky.
Feel lucky to have stagnated at a level where I can get off the couch paddle in such amazing places with better style and more peace of mind than ever (not that that's saying much).
Nothing concrete on the wish-list for 2014 other than a looong run down the Soleduck. Scoped a fair amount of that river from the road while returning from a fly-fishing trip to Forks and the whole thing looks beautiful. I'd love to put in just below Salmon Falls and log as many miles as possible in a day...

I'm just a class III weekend warrior but I logged 59 days OTR; big event was the Grand Canyon in Sept. Wish list for 2014 includes Middle Fk Salmon (confirmed) and hopefully some time in Califonia.

2013 started off on the Skykomish and my 50th time kayaking on whitewater. That was a great way to start my year!
I got about 80 days on the river this past year. (That makes for 139 days total in my short boating experience!)
I paddled in five different states and hit 11 new rivers/runs.
This year it want to get waaaay more days of boating in. I wonder if 150 is doable!? I would also like to partake in more self support multiday kayak trips and sea kayak the San Juan Islands.
2014 is gonna be stellar!

55 days on the water for me this year - the most I've had in 7 years (since I've started a desk job).
A dream tour of idaho (SF Salmon>SF Payette> MF Salmon> Selway> Lochsa) and the grand canyon of the elwha are the highlights of my year. All the dawn patrol/after-work soulo runs on the Dosewallips stand out too!
Now it's time for some more moisture in this water year!

I reviewed trends in my journal over the past few years and can confirm my suspicions: Marriage and then a child lead to downward trends in annual days on the river.
40 days for me this year (w/ 16 month old)
High lights:
2nd personal D of Upper Mashel
Jefferson
NW Creeking Comp (Lewis Drainage)
Ingals and Peshastin w/ snatch at 16,000(highest flow PD)
Memorial Day Weekend on the Cooper: 3 straight days
Riding around Idaho in Lloyd the Van:
E. Fk of S. Fk Salmon
South Fk Salmon
Main Salmon
Selway
Grand Canyon of the Elwha
Lower Wind: No bitching in August about no water. Go run this.
Here's to 2014!!!

Didn't keep my journal up to date this year but know I got over 100 days.
For new runs in WA:
FITW
Peshastin
Sauk
Rapid
Minnesota:
Lower St. Louis (Not my first run on this but did have PFD's on Octopus and Fin Falls)
East Beaver
French
Kettle
Partridge
Pike
Vermilion/Table Rock Falls
Despite leaving the magical playground of the PNW, it's been a good year.

2013. Reflected on Rob McKibbon's encouragement to try learning a roll. Did it (sort of). Lots of encouragement (and rescues) along the way. Took out the Remix69 more and progressively left home the Aire Force IK. Paddled my first winter, meeting lots of smooth boaters on the Green. Discovered the Tilton. Got skunked in Bend awaiting the Owyhee to come in, diverting to the North Umpquah in March and all its beauty. Ventured north to the Chilliwack in May. Faced down FEAR at 6.5 feet on the Lochsa. Returned like a salmon to the annual runoff that is spring on the Wenatchee, eyes wide at the eddy fences pushed up at 16k; got a taste of the groove in an Allstar on Rodeo and Turkey Shoot. Long hauled it (twice) for multi-day runs on the Rogue. Skipped out early from work for Wednesdays evenings on the MM. Deflated with recurring swims on most of the above. Resolved to decipher the roll. Six straight weeks, morning roll sessions at first light on Lake Washington. 2500 rolls. Lee's Ferry put in on September 15. Grand Canyon takeout on October 2. Government shutdown in my absence and, even better, No Swims. Tamped down the thudding heart on each approach to Boulder Drop; still holding the Sky feature with deep respect for its teeth and tentacles. (Anyone seen my Werner?). Most memorable - paddled with lots of great folks in kayaks, rafts and cats who define the Northwest boating community. Boofs, safety, and smiles. 102 river days. The current moves on.

Got on some fun runs this year. Not as many, but the search for new whitewater keeps me going up into the mountains.
Highlights:
3 day Grand Canyon Elwha trip
21 day Grand Canyon Colorado trip
2 day quickie on Tshletshy, hiking up from the bottom for the 5th Canyon
Upper Upper NF Sky
leading trips down some of my favorite runs like: Robe, Tum, Tye, Foss, CC Lewis, Peshastin Creek, Ohanepecosh
...and hucking off the biggest waterfalls of my life in Mexico, tossing my paddle and nailing hand rolls, ya!
Some new runs:
Sloan Creek
SF Sauk
Herman Creek
Muddy Fork Cispus
Top of the Rock Creek - Columbia Gorge
After a couple years away, the Little White is still awesome. Another highlight was watching Mr Clean playboat exit at 15,000. Epic. More river exploring in the PNW this year. One final highlight was getting to go to Mexico in Dec and Jan. Lots of amazing class V here in Veracruz, big waterfalls and missions in warm water.
See y'all in a few weeks!

Not my most epic year but I did get a few new runs in
Upper Mashell
West Fork Humptulips Gorge
Canyon River (satsop)
White Sands Creek. ID
Talkeetna River. AK (amazing four day, fly in, wilderness trip)
I duno how many days I got....sad to say less then 100
But I also spent at least 50 days working on and sailing my sailboat, I'm trying to get it together to sail up to the Skooks this summer. My fall was plagued with back problems and low water, my worst fall in 20 years, one day in Oct, one day in Nov and two in Dec.
Looking forward to more days and more water in the new year!.....Tilt-ON!
