To run the Southern Green you need to study the timber
company's road numbers, then go on there automated
phone line and determine if the roads are open.
This is a good class three run with two drops that are a little harder, which you can portage.
For levels there is a stick gage just upstream from take
at least it used to be. At 6 feet the river is low
and will seem long. Into the sevens are much better
levels. I have paddled over 8 feet a number of times.
Before the road issues we would wait for several days of hard rain and it would be good. I haven't paddled this for years due to closed roads when its running.
You can get a feel for flows from toutle gage.
For the two harder drops one is on the right and the other is middle right going right, but I caution you to
scout for wood both of these drops have had wood at
different times.

Pretty sure it's just a rain drainage. I know that BIGWATER get's in there from time to time at typical highwater flows for him. I remember him telling me that your best bet for getting on it is during the hunting season in the fall.

Yeah they like to capitalize on those expensive rec permits during hunting season. And close a ton of the main roads the rest of the year. The whole shore of the west fork of the chehalis is littered with no trespassing signage!

Why do they care if boaters have access? Seems so benign. Maybe I'm the ignorant one...someone school me

The access is all on private logging land and they only open the gates to the public during hunting season. They are closed the rest of the season because people are filthy animals, they go up on the roads and dump trash, start meth cooking dens, and basically trash the land. That's basically the line I got from the people who manage the land surrounding the Puyallup gorge so I imagine it applies to all privately held logging land.
They make the access passes expensive enough that it's unreasonable to purchase one for just accessing the area a handful of times a year. Basically it's their way of protecting their investment.
