Has anyone been there? I'm throwing around the idea of going down sometime this winter. Looking at this company. http://www.exchile.com/kayakchile.html Possibly getting to the Siete Tazas too. The Futa is amazing. I would recomend it to anyone as a place that you should want to visit before you die...or before it is dammed in the next 5-10 years.
As of now, the Futa is beautiful, remote, and offers all sorts of options from beginner to expert and from paly boating to scare yourself poop-less big water V. Ashley, I believe that company is Chris Spelius' baby so it should be good to go. |

The Futa is a very tasty treat! And it gets better, for play, with lower water levels. I paddled it from 20k up to about 80k. Not so much play at those levels as hanging on in some of the rapids. It's big water unlike anything we have up here. Challenging, but worth it, and you'll be a better boater afterwards. The EXCHILE folks are the ones to go with. They know the river and are laid back and their camp/facility is top notch. Nothing like taking a hot shower in a natural grotto with views of the Tres Monhas and river. I'd look for dates in later February for more play like water levels. -Nick |

Heh, I don't know, Nick, there is some good play as levels go up depending on how crazy you wana get. Not sure the exact levels but at medium high water there is a killer wave on the shoulder of a huge hole in Mas o Menos, at slightly less flow there is a good hole on river right above the second bridge and at super high water mundaca is a killer wave.
Of course at lower flows you have Pistola, Disco Biscuit, and Himalaya.. a little less scary for playing in. Although still, the whirlpools behind Disco can be a little beefy sometimes =). |

KTW, we weren't getting to crazy at the high flows. Did surf Mundaca everytime through, sometimes not on purpose. But yeah you're right the features are there if you dare at high flows. Still all was good. With that said, a lot of the local expat playboat crowd was heading to Argentina to paddle while the river was high. That's tells you something. Get on that river. -N |

I highly recomend it. Only place I have been where Hydraulics are comparable to the Grand Canyon
Kayak International (Ken whiting, et al) also runs trips down there and they are focused solely on kayaks.
Instuctors/guides we had were first rate including EJ.
There are a couple of class 3/4 warm ups before you hit the FUT. Azul and pacuare(?).
There was quite a few boaters that were there on private trips also.
There are 3 sections commonly run, upper, bridge (middle) and lower. It gets easier as you go lower.
The cave camp above Zeta is still etched in my memory. unforgettable!
