  Takeout Details

A couple hundred yards above mile maker 94 there is a sandy beach on river left at the base of a short rapid. While on the river you can make out the retaining wall that “the Wall” (a long class IV-V rapid depending on water levels that lurk below). There is a good pullout a couple hundred feet upstream of here.

  Fun Facts

While fairly short, this run has some decent play and is worth running laps on or hitting on your way out of Leavenworth. It can also be run to provide a good warm up for those wanting to run Lower Tumwater.

   Run Description

The run starts off with a 1/4 mile or so flat water providing a chance to get in a few rolls and get warmed up. The first rapid, Metro, is the crux of the run. The current here has been pinched off by a mudflow on river right that occurred during the high water of May ’06. The line cleanest line starts mid channel and works right over the ledge to avoid the large reversal.

Just below Metro there is a small pool followed by a hundred yards or so of fun rapids. At higher flows this section has some fun wave trains a few decent sized holes while at lower flows there is some boulder dodging.

The next significant rapid is adjacent to the Swiftwater Picnic Area where the river takes a hard left. Cherry Hole has a few big boulders and is surprisingly pushy as the channel narrows around the bend. (Note: At 15-20K cfs a wave train forms at the lower end of the picnic area that that is reminiscent of the Trinity wave in Drunkard’s Drop)

The next couple rapids are class II-III and contain some fun little catch on the fly surf waves.

The last rapid is an S bend that veers left first, and then back right. The first bend has a ledge on river right that can be punched or avoided be staying hard left.

At the base of the rapid the Wall comes into view just as the take-out appears on river left.
