  Access

This run has really easy access. The entire run pretty much parallels the Howard Hanson Res. Access Road. You can pick any put in and take out although most people run all the way to Kanaskat Palmer Park.

  Putin Details

The most common Put in is located just before the gates of the Howard Hanson Res. You will see a little gate that blocks a gravel road which leads down to the river. Easy put in for rafts and any other type of Whitewater craft.

  Takeout Details

The most common takeout is the Kanaskat Palmer state park. Enter the park and follow signs to the river access. At the bottom of the hill, the road splits. Go right here and continue to the parking area at the end of the road. A trail leads to the river just above Ledge Drop 1 (Class III+). Groups looking for a class 2+ run take out here. Alternately, if you head left at the bottom of the hill and head to the road end, there is a trail that allows access to run Ledge Drop 1 and the rest of the rapids in the park.

12/14/14. Ran from the upper put in until the park and all of the wood has been cleared. The only possible concern to boaters is just after the surf shelves by the "lunch stop" as you are looking down stream the river forks and on the right fork is a branch that over hangs but is not very large so it may not be of much concern. All routes are clear to run. - Posted by: FreeRider on 12/14/2014 8:23:00 PM -  [Remove Alert]

  Fun Facts

Every year the Green River Cleanup is held on this stretch along with several others on the Green River. Participants enjoy helping clean the river banks and debris from this classic run.

Run Description [Season: Fall, Winter, Spring]

The Headworks section is really a nice easy float. And is a classic training run for new kayakers. In the spring and summer it is not unusual to find locals floating down in tubes and other fun inflatables, but don’t let that fool you, there are still a few rapids and certainly some class III towards the end of the run.

The majority of this run is slow winding channels. Most of the major river bends have little play waves and other fun features that beginners can learn on.

The only major rapid in this stretch is Railroad Bridge Drop (alternatively, Weir or Ledge). This rapid is a simple ledge that is formed from an old fish weir. This rapid is preceeded by (surprise) a railroad bridge. The right side of this ledge can form a dangerous weir hydraulic, especially at higher flows. This can be avoided by running the sloping v-shaped ledge on the left side. The rapid can be scouted on the left.

Be sure not to miss the Powder Room. Another favorite for beginning surfers.

The rest of this run is filled with a variety of class II to II+ boulder gardens, some of which become fairly powerful at higher levels and become class III, but at flows most intermediate boaters will run are no harder than II+.

The standard take-out is the upper takeout in Kanaskat-Palmer Park, just above Ledge Drop 1 (first rapid in the Upper Gorge run). Alternatively, groups wanting a bit more excitement can run Ledge Drop 1 (III+) and the Park rapids (which consist of 3 rapids in the II-III range) and takeout at the lower takeout in the park. A great training day for those stepping up to class 3 is to run the Headworks section and then run a few laps of the park rapids, with an easy in-park shuttle.
