Topic: Lochsa Weekend Discussion Thread Posted: 21 Mar 2007 at 4:01pm |
This is the Lochsa Weekend discussion thread. Please post any questions below. Remember the actual Trip Details are located on the Lochsa Weekend | Trip Page Planning on heading on out to the Lochsa for some big water, play, and maybe a little crekking on Fish Creek the last weekend in April.
I'm planning on leaving Friday April 27th. It is about a 7 hour drive.

How long is the drive over there from Monroe?

The 7 hours is based on the Mapquest time estimate from Seattle to Lowell so 7 is probably pretty close for Monroe.

You should be ok since your going that early, but fyi, I've heard the snowpack sucks over there and their water is starting to flow already. You want at least 5k for decent play. I think 7 or 8 was optimal.

Does anyone know if that stretch has a guage somewhere online, even if it is some other authority?

I ran the lochsa this last week when I was in missoula. It was on the low side, but still allot of fun with one good feature called pipeline to play at. When the river really starts to flow there is play throughout the entire run.
When I ran it the internet gauge was about 5ft, and the locals told me to subtracted 2-3ft off this to get an accurate reading.
Epic river.

I'll be shooting for this trip..Fun FUn.. Live here arleady Lewiston anways.. Pipeline is 117 miles from my front door..
Internet gauge is off compared to the descriptions..The bridge gause is what the locals all use.. Best place to find that is here at this website, during the main season the give daily updates.. http://nt1.adventuresports.com/aso/ASAPshowpage.asp?Client=Marty
I'm half tempted to drive up there saturday for some play and maybe a run. Wish there were more boaters in the area..

I just poster this trip on the Idaho chapter of pp.com. (IdahoKayaker.com)
Hopefully we will get a few locals to join the trip and show us the goods on the Lochsa. I'll also try to get a few of them to come out to the PP.com ball.
So who else is coming, right now only Leif has officially joined the trip. Trust me, this river is sick and has everything. A runnable creek be the campground, big water, sick play, a technical upper section and a relatively nontechnical lower section.

we hit on the Lochsa this weekend and it was a great time even at the 3500-4000 cfs range. At that level it was possible to hit a lot of the one timer no eddy service playspots. A little higher would be nice, but it still kicked ass. The weekend you guys are heading down there will be another keg or two on the way as per a Bozeman paddling party as well. syotr

hey everyone
I'd really like to go! but i still have the boat, paddle, booties, ride problem... the prob is that i don't have 'em....xD
so if anyone could hook me up with some stuff that would be great. I think that I'll buy some booties and gloves before cuz I have to buy it anyways.... but I can't buy a boat or paddle cuz it is to expencive to get it over to germany when i leave....xD
so if someone could give me a ride who lives in an 30 to 45 min area around my place that would be awesome. (cuz my hostmom told me that she could give me rides if its not more than 20 to 30 min but I think i could talk her into 45)
I hope we can figure something out together cuz i really want to go!!! I've never been on a big river with a lot of water cuz we don't have so many of them in Germany..... tho i think that would be a great experience!!!!
peace

Yeah I'll talk to my hostmom the first thing when I get home (O'm in school right now.....xD)
oh yeah and what boat do you have that I could use? cuz I'm pretty tall with my 6"4' to 6"5'....xD

The boat is a Dagger GT 8.3. You will not be able to play in it, but you will fit in it just fine.

I would suggest going to the links page and checking out the different store links there, it is at the bottom labeled Whitewater Retail Stores (WA). You should find one there that has what you need. Let me know if you want some suggestions or if you would like others input, make another thread so Tom's Lochsa Trip doesn't get hi-jacked.

Ok, a few things...
1) I thought we were leaving on Thursday to make it a 3-day weekend given the long drive...thoughts?
2) My truck rack will not be done, but there shouldn't be any problem getting 3-4 playboats and gear for 4-5 people in the truck.
3) I've got spare equipment...just PM me.
And finally, 4) James - are you coming?
