   Calendar Event: Canyon Creek Race

Paddlers With the Canyon Creek Race struggling to draw a good attendance over the past couple of years we have decided to reorganize the race. In doing this we also wanted to try to secure a date that would have more conducive water levels. After meeting with some other key community members we decided to move it to an earlier date in order to gain more community support and increase local attendance. One of the original intentions of the Canyon Creek Race was to try to raise awareness of the non-boating community to Canyon Creek's spectacular recreational opportunities, intern organizers were hoping to raise conservation awareness keeping Canyon Creek free of hydro power projects and have a fun local event. In the spirit of this, the community has decided to try to bring these ideas back! As organizers of the Northwest Creek Comp. we are hoping to make the new race a conservation oriented grass roots event for our local NW community! The new race will be a little longer, have a few more classes including an IK and R2 class, and focus on providing a race that will crown the fastest down river racer in the NW! After much thought we decided April 12th would be good! There will be an after party at Mike Olson's house on the East Fork Lewis. It seems like the non-boating community in the area is very aware of the local boating opportunities: I first learned about the race from the guy who lives nearby, he pulled over at takeout specifically to tell us about it! He seemed really excited that we were out paddling the river.
Anyway, thanks for putting it on, it's going to be really fun.
Are you going to have different classes for long/short kayaks?

Just wanted to mention Luke is doing an awesome job throwing this race together. I went down to Portland a couple weeks ago for the planning meeting and it's sounding like this race is going to be super legit and a hell of a lot of fun.
For those who are not interested in racing or feel like this section is a little above them skillwise, please consider rallying down and helping w/ safety. There should be groups of spectators heading up the creek to watch. If anyone would like to help please email either myself ( paulgamache@gmail.com) or luke @ eddyhopperluke@gmail.com

not sure about tobin falls lol.
Hammering spot is the second of the twin 10' ledges. Just above Toby's, pretty much the last gasp of whitewater on the run.
It's a good course, because of those III drops between the big falls and champagne, which offer lots of route choices based on flow, and you can really lose time in there.

for eagle falls? definitely on the low end. I'm not sure there's a raft line at that flow.
From memory, in a raft, I think you have to punch that hole center at the top, and you want a flow where it isn't super sticky. Seems like it's worse at low water when the flake to the right isn't covered.
It's been rafted/paddle boated/cat boated before ... maybe head over to the wrrr yahoo group and ask there?

some big boat gnar? Boy, there's not much. You could hook up with Fish and R2 the Truss ... icy tumwater?
I hear the Grays is a great run, and it seems like everyone goes in there too high. Might check the gauges and if it looks to be on the low end, check it out. Some big riverwide holes in there. Check oregonkayaking.net for a goof TR.

I love it!! I suspect I am not the only bad day there? But maybe the only one sucked out of his boat?
I just figured out they are talking about Tobys drop. It is a little downstream of Hammering Spot. It is where someone got pinned and died. I assume his name was Toby.
I wasn't trying to make light of that at all, all appologies.

what about the gorge section of w. humptulips at 700? I would be down for the truss but some one told me that there is a log that may be really hard to get around in a raft and we would need some one willing to rope up for big brother cuzz it would suck to be in that cave with a raft over your head

Having IK'd, hardshelled and rafted the truss many times, i would have to disagree with the notion that the cave on big bro comes into play in a raft.
First, a raft line would drop further left off the launch flake, taking the cave almost completely out of the equation. It's more shallow on the left side of the landing zone, but having so much floation it's not an issue. Also the cave hardly has any aeration making any possible swim of little consequence as long as the level is under 3 feet on the stick gauge. There is also a rope attached in the cave allowing a swimmer a point of extraction.
The major concern from a rafting standpoint would be lower zig zag. I paddled this section last weekend. It's lower now, which makes the wood a mandatory portage in a raft. the portage would be tough, but doable with rope work and assistance from others.
If your considering getting in there, i'd paddle with you, i love paddleboating this section. I have access to a super puma if your feeling spunky...
