Topic: CC Stilly - Ready or Not... Posted: 28 Feb 2008 at 9:50pm |
So I've been living less than a 5 minute paddle downstream from the Canyon Creek Stilly take out for 2 years now and I still haven't paddled Canyon Creek. Well now I have a creek boat and I've managed to paddle it some so I'm finally ready for my first run down CC. Any Canyon Creek Vets out there willing to show a first timer down? I'd like to take my time and scout / take pictures as we go so it would probably be a slower trip on at least the first lap (assuming I survive ).
I'm thinking maybe this weekend depending on levels. I'm looking for a low / medium flow for a first descent - I'm less scared of hitting rocks / pinning than I am of getting pushed around in bigger water. I see there's an alert on the CC river page dealing with the flows. What's a good flow for a first time? Anybody have good level info for the Dept of Ecology gauge? Or if someone knows of a good visual indicator at the put in or take out, it's close enough I don't mind driving over and taking a look.
So there it is. Anyone interested in sharing info and/or leading me down?

Sign me up. I don't know if it will be running, but I'm willing to drive up and take a look.

What have you paddled in your creek boat? Don't want to scare you or anything, but It's not a run to test out your new boat skills. CC's a short run, but it's hard to get out once your in there if something went wrong. I prefer 6ft and above for levels, but a good first time level while still keeping some flow through there would be around 5 - 5.5ft.

Dave,
I am a CC (stilly) virgin too, I would be stoked to get on it with a group that was up to scouting and such.
What day are you thinking?

Sure?

POW - I've had my boat for about 2 months now and have paddled it most of those weekends on the Sky - not creeking, but I've got a good feel for the boat now. I'm assuming those levels you gave are for the Stilly guage but which one? The 2 guages are reading almost a foot difference right now and that would be a huge difference in levels on CC.
As far as what day to paddle, I'm open for either day this weekend and probably next weekend too, depending on levels and people willing to show me down.

I'm busy this weekend, but I'm always in for some CC north action. If it's next weekend, I'd be glad to safety boat and take some time in there. It's a lovely, though short, little canyon.

With the discrepancy on the SF Stilli gauges and the fact that the correlation to CC was never exact, I'd recommend using the DOE gauge on CC to determine levels. 250-300cfs is LOW but still fun if you're not a high-water snob, and would be a good first time level to see the run if you like technical boating. At that levels, there's less push but all the major drops have clean lines WITH THE EXCEPTION of Headwall, which changed a bit in the floods and has pinned two or three paddlers this season alone (search back for Kyle K's post earlier this winter for details). And the ledge in the first drop will still get your attention. Double that flow and the lines get bigger but you definitely feel more push. Double again and hang on for a good time - but be aware of the ledge at the tail end of the long boulder garden.
Again, I'll mention Headwall drop - at lower flows it's bite is worse than it's bark, but it's easy to scout and / or carry on RR.

jalmquist,
The pin spot is towards the right of headwall, correct? Last time I ran it levels were high, be we took a far left line anyway.

I just talked to The Mckibbon. There's an early trip tomorow - 9:00 or 9:30. Be there or be somewhere else.

I'll add that there is also a portage on river left, that may be a bit more arduous, but is a better option for a tentative paddler. The portage on RR requires a strong ferry from a micro eddy wit ha guard rock at low flows. You're right against the headwall, and I've seen carnage trying to pull that ferry. The RL portage also allows some scouting of the next section. I'm a low water snob, so I know the run fairly well at those 250-400 levels. lol SYOTR, --B

TD, I ran it for the first time at a pretty low level and found it fun.

If Canyon Creek spikes we can run Pilchuck Creek instead. Easier than Canyon Creek, but still tons of fun. Plus a waterfall.

I'm going to get out and boat something tomorrow - now with the river forecast I'm not sure where so I've edited the CC trip to reflect that. Hopefully it's still CC but if it's too high, Pilchuck or the Stilly are backups. I'll post here in the morning with the river of the day and a meeting location.

Level is too high for CC today. Heading to Pilchuck creek instead. 10:30 meeting time at the hwy 9 bridge. If you are planning on coming, please join the trip or call me so we know who's showing up.

Sounds like a good plan... I love CC but don't recommend running it high your first time for sure. That very first ledge is known to hand out some good trashings when the water's up (I've had at least one turn in there). And that's not the way I like to start the day on a new river. I agree, 250-300 is a great level to learn the lines on... bony in places, but most spots are fairly filled in and not much push. About 350-450 is my favorite range... nicely filled in, but not too big.
