I am not questioning the almighty Hugo, but I would love to get more details on the snowshoer's at alpental... I dabble a bit with the ole shoes myself and I am interested since I was caught in an avalanche 2 weeks ago with D1 and his brother up there. Ok ok it was only enough to bury our feet, but it was still an eye opener and a fatality is something I would really want to investigate since I frequent the area.
Fun Question What piece of equipment can be used for boating or snowshoeing and is also just as important for your car's rack, but often times gets stolen or snatched by other enthusiasts and is very breakable?

Hugo, easy does it senor,
Even though I do agree with you in regards to your personal policies about choosing wisely the folks you boat with or ride with, you come off like a shit talkin' SOB, chill out man.
I am on your side. I too feel that there is a general cloud of complacency covering the backcountry world and boating world. It does not take much to make the "best trip of your life" into the "worst trip of your life," especially when you take into account the sports we are talking about.
Look lively out there and error on the side of caution. Seriously though Hugo, your message is right on, but your delivery needs work, you are loosing them with your "tart tounge". Sorry to be the one to tell you this.
Here are two links to 2 well done avalanche videos that I have recently seen.
Sorry Lief, it can happen to the "big boys" too:
And this one is just cool, talk about power...sheez!

This is where I go: http://www.nwac.us/accidents.htm
There might be more data on turns-all-year.com, though I am new to that site.
Now, to answer the trivia, my only guess is a jack in the box antenna ball... What do we use in boating that is breakable?

To clarify - I know it happens to everyone. Sometimes my statements come out a bit off when I am composing them on my blackberry - little tiny screen, you know. I don't recall the statistics, but there are certainly plenty of deaths that could be avoided with proper equipment and training. Is that 10%, 20%, 50%? I don't know without doing some digging. Certainly the paradise incident I heard about yesterday is sad, because there would likely (form what I have heard) be no loss of life had beacons been in use.
Bottom line: I have taken the class, know how to use the equipment, but am a novice. I have plenty to learn, but from what I hear, it is a lifelong process.

yup, same here, taking my level II next month, pretty excited about it. Even though it is serious, it is also an enjoyable experiance to go up and play with your beacons. I like to have races, with beer being the prize. I like to print out the NWAC forecast and go up and dig a pit and see if my snowpack analysis jives with nwac's, and if it does...you got it...the prize is beer!

Lighten up dude! What's with the agro attitude? We're not a bunch of wilting flowers, but there's no need to be calling people dumb asses.
Yes, these are dangerous sports, and yes, I know how much trouble one can get into by not picking a good posse. Tell me something I don't know; with all that alleged experience, you aught to be able to come up with something.
The truth is, I'm pretty risk averse. I play it pretty safe. And I go out there to have fun with people of like mind. I don't do it so that I can run the steepest gnar and to feel superior so that I can call people who don't do it my way a bunch of dumb asses. But that's just me.
Dan
p.s. when you do run the gnar, take some pictures. I certainly appreciate seeing people killin' it since I can't or won't.

Bringing it back!
I am headed up to Stevens this afternoon and thought I'd share it- spending the next couple nights -Sat/ Sun night up there, so if anyone is headed up, or if anybody wants to bring some pallets. Staying in the overflow parking lot for the Rvs, I think. Look for a grey Chevy ExpressVan with racks. Or call - 253 three 50. 540three. Should be good.
