___Skokomish________
Saturday morning Dave, Brad and I departed my house, rolling in the
chuck wagon at 7:15 am. We met up with Mike, Beth and Judah Harms later
on I5. There we rallied up in seperate cars to the put in where we met
Mike Hoover. We met up at the Take Out which is basically roadside 4-5
feet from the river.
We
warmed up and then ran shuttle to the putin. Halfway through Mike
Hoover lead me off the main road and we stopped on the High Steel
Bridge. This offered an upper view of the river. The nice thing is that
this view is over the two hardest rapids on the run in my opinion. High
Steel Falls and Bobbing for Butler. Both are -V maybe V in higher water.

| This view shows bobbing for butler. This is basically a
class IV lead in two a set of two large holes. The issue is that the
holes also have a set of under cut rocks and a nasty head wall. It is
not a hard rapid but could turn nasty. |
| If
you were standing on the high steel bridge looking up stream you would
see this ledge. When you run this ledge you need to be ready to eddy
out and scout High Steel Falls. High Steel Falls is the next rapids
below this.
|

| I know these photos are not that great, but were pretty
high up, thus the name High Steel Falls and High Steel Bridge. Anyways
this is basically a set of three ledges. The first is tiny but has an
odd current that can suprise you, the second is about 4 feet tall and
has a rock dividing it in two sections. The third ledge is about 6 feet
tall and has a horseshe shaped hole at the base and it is very large.
Its the whole river in a 15 foot wide pour over. The line is hugging
the right the whole time. |
After
viewing the bridge from both sides we ripped off down the road to
finish the shuttle. At the putin we met Mike and The Fam in the Van. We
all raced to get ready and then shuffled down the 1/2 mile trail to the
river.
You probably have two questions right now. 1. Why were we
in such a hurry and why is the trip title ___Skokomish________? Well
there is a good mile and a half of
