AccessTake HWY 82 northeast out of Elgin or La Grande, Or. towards Minam near mile 33.5. The typical putin is at the Minam store at the confluence of the Wallowa and Minam rivers. There is also a alternate putin on the Wallowa river a few miles upstream. The Minam store can arrange your shuttle and as of 2012 charged very reasonable rates |
Putin DetailsThere is a public launch site next to the Minam Store. Get there early to beat the crowds in summer! |
Takeout DetailsTake out is at the Town of Troy or alternatively you can take out at Powwatka bridge, about 7 miles upstream from Troy. |

Fun FactsGreat 2-3 day trip through a scenic valley. |
Run Description [Season: Year Round]The run starts out on the Wallowa River at the Minam Store. The store has some basic supplies, but you will want to have all your shopping done for mandatory items before you get there. The store is a good place to pick up an invasive species permit if you do not already have one. Camping the night before the trip can be done at Minam State Park which shares a driveway with the store.
Initially the run is very continuous in nature. The drops start off as easy class II, but there are few eddies. Soon after launching you will come to the Minam Roller, a nice wave that kayakers will enjoy surfing. From here to the Snake River there were a ton of catch on the fly surf waves to keep the kayakers busy around 3800 CFS. A short while later you come to Red Rock Rapid where a boulder splits the river into two channels. The left channel is open at most levels, but this spot has been known to collect wood.
About ten miles from the putin a bridge marks the confluence of the Grande Ronde and Wallowa rivers. Campsites begin popping up and the action on the water never gets intense, but keeps you busy. Around rm 43 the Powwatka Bridge marks the first road access since the confluence. Between Powwatcka and Troy the river slows down a bit, and campsites get few and far between.
All in all the run is mostly class II with a couple of class III's.
