Paddled upper Chewuch on 4/28/2013, found wood aplenty. 7 log portages + 1 mega portage (~100 yards), a few log limbos, and a few log boofs. The nastiest bit can be mostly seen from the road. - Posted by: TomMarley on 4/29/2013 3:18:00 PM -

Fun FactsAll information between asterisks relate to a highwater trip.
*If your in the area during highwater you can put on Lake Creek (which is about a 1/3rd of the total flow of the Chewuch) at the bridge near the campground and paddle that down to the confluence and paddle down to the take out or continue onto the middle section.
From Lake creek down for about 1.5-2mi. the run is very continuous class IV (IV+ because of the no swim nature and potential for wood). It felt very much like a highwater Pilchuck but a little wider and a bit more time to react.
Above the campground you can see more whitewater that is much steeper and continues from where the road comes next to the river and is pretty continuous until the confluence, class V.
Very Quality experience.
There are lots of blind corners on the run so on your first lap make sure you catch your eddies. Our group had a close call with picking the wrong channel.
During this highwater run it was 2700 CFS on the USGS Chewuch @ Winthrop Gauge.* |
