Putin DetailsJust a short drive on Morris Valley road from the turnoff from Hwy 7, turn onto Chehalis FSR. It's a bit of a haul up this gravel road, which drives along a beautiful lake at one point (unfortunately the last time time I was here a bunch of yahoos were camping here and completely trashing the area). Eventually you'll arrive at a bridge over Statlu creek, the put in.
There is a alternate putin on the Chehalis. Drive 1.6 km past the Statlu Creek Bridge, and take the second spur road to the right. After a while you will come to a wide spot in the road with a trail off to the right and a wash out on the left. From here it is a short walk down a steep and sketchy trail to the river. The trail is a steeper, narrower, and less stable version of the trail to Paradise on the Green. Bringing ropes to lower boats is highly advisable. |

Other IssuesNo on-line gague exists. During the rainy season and early snowmelt, it may run in a similar pattern to the Chilliwack, but lacks the high elevation snow for late season like the Chilliwack. Check the flow visually at the take-out, if the gravel bar on river right is 1/3 exposed it should be a medium level. Also, at the put-in if you have a minimal flow on Statlu, you will have plenty of water once you get down to the Chehalis. There is a stick gage about 100 yards upstream from the take-out on a concrete structure, but it is hard to get to except when your floating down at the end of your trip: Low: .25m, Medium .5m, High: .75m. |
Run Description [Season: Rainy/snowmelt]This is a fantastic run. Of the 8 miles listed about 1.5 are on Statlu Creek and 6.5 on the Chehalis. The run starts on Statlu creek on some wide boulder gardens that are a real scrape at low water, but soon enters a beautiful canyon with cleaner drops in the 3-4 range, mostly boat scoutable stuff. After some nice creeky fun, you reach the confluence and the real fun begins. The Chehalis flows through a beautiful canyon and features perfectly spaced pool-drop III-III+ rapids all the way down with one class IV rapid, Landslide, which comes up early in the run. Landslide can be scouted/portaged on the right and has a few different routes to choose from... but be careful as the landslide that created the rapid still drops a few rocks down now and then. Leave your helmet ON!
There is a alternate putin for those who don't feel up to the Statlu challenge. This takes you down a steep trail to the Chehalis River about 1/4th of a mile from the confluence with Statlu Creek. Between here and the confluence there is one class II, and two class III drops.
