AccessHead out Hwy 410 from Enumclaw |
Putin DetailsTurn down Forest Service road 74. Put-in at the bridge just a couple hundred yards down the road. This put-in is on the EF White about 1/2 mile upstream from the confluence with the WF.
There are a number of alternate put-in and take-outs along the way allowing for shorter trips. |
Takeout DetailsBridge camp. It's on a gated road with a steep 1/4 mile walk up to the gate. The gate is at mile 35.3 on Hwy 410. An easier access is about 3 miles further up the road where there's a big turnout near a bridge over the river on the logging road that parallels the highway. There are a couple more easy access points between Federation Forest and Greenwater that are near the mid-point in the run. |

Fun FactsFeeds of Mt. Rainier glaciers, so it often has water during hot summer days. Watch for giant golf balls. |
Run Description [Season: year-round]UPDATE: 5/17/2010 - THERE IS A LOT OF WOOD IN THIS RUN NOW AND ALOT OF UNDERCUT BANKS SO MORE AND MORE TREES CAN BE EXPECTED TO TOPPLE IN. BE VERY CAREFUL ON THIS RUN... THERE IS A VERY DANGEROUS LOGJAM NEAR FEDERATION FOREST, SO IF YOU DO THIS RUN, YOU WOULD BE SMART TO PUT IN BELOW OR TAKE OUT ABOVE THIS PARK. THE RAPIDS ARE ONLY CLASS 2/3, BUT 2/3 BOATERS SHOULD NOT DO THIS RUN AT THIS TIME. You can PM joeskayak for more info.
This used to be a popular run, but has become less popular because the road to the lower takeout is gated cutting off some of the better rapids. Still, a 9-10 mile run can be made using the upper takeout.
Most of the rapids are class 2+ at low to medium levels, but big wavetrains appear when the water is up (3000+). The main hazard on this run is logs which sometimes are river-wide. Beginners should definitely have an experienced guide with them on this run because of that. Also, while the water can be quite clear in winter and spring, in summer and fall the water turns very silty and can be challenging to read. That said, when the wood situation isn't bad, this is a great run for boaters making the step from class 2 up to 3.
The White valley is built up on lahar flows, so there aren't big drops in the river. Instead it flows at a very consistent gradient and is quite swift at higher water. Keep an eye out for debris at all time, besides logs, there is riprap with rebar in a couple spots.
