AccessRequires a 2 +/- mile hike on the rugged ridge trail, which is not regularly maintained. As of Oct 2014 the trail was in decent shape with a couple of branches and one or two large logs obstructing the trail. You cross at least 10 tributaries on the hike, only 6 of them are any real volume of water. |
Putin DetailsFrom the Take out:
-Drive EAST on NF-29 for 3.2 miles
-Take SLIGHT RIGHT onto NF-2913 and follow for 2.6 miles to the end of the road. Rugged Ridge Trail is slightly down the hill from the turn around. |
Takeout DetailsFrom Port Angeles:
-Follow US-101 W towards FORKS for 54 Miles
-Take a LEFT onto Sitkum-Solduc Road follow for 3.6 miles
-Stay RIGHT and cross the NF Calawah for another 4.3 miles
-on RIGHT there is a pull off that heads towards the river and from here you can see the confluence of Hyas Creek and the SF Calwah

Other IssuesExpect wood in the run, when we ran it in Oct. 2014 the run was clean but there was lots of wood in the river and a couple of log ducks that would be portages with higher water. |
Fun FactsAn intermediate run through a corner of the Olympic National Park. Old Growth and wilderness feel.
This would be a good run to try out your hiking system for the first time. It's long enough that a carry system helps, but if it fails on you the hike is short enough to shoulder your boat to the river. |
Run Description [Season: Rainy]Bedrock gorge right after the put in. Most of these rapids are boat scoutable but taking a peek for wood is a good idea.
The rapids are in the first half of the run. The Second half is more class II with a sprinkling of Class III.
