Texas Dave and I are planning on checking out Pilchuck Creek tomorow with the Sauk as a possible backup run. All is dependent on water levels, wood issues, and road access. Hopefully we'll get on something! Always the Sky as a backup backup plan. SYOTR! Meet at Hwy 9 bridge at 10:30am

Hey Jeff, a few of us are also interested in Pilchuck Creek. We may be planning on checking out Bacon Creek as our backup plan, or possibly the N.Frk of the Sauk.
Personally, I think the Sky ain't a shabby back up plan either, but generally our thinking is revolving around paddling something we don't paddle all the time, and if Pilchuck is skunked, we'll be up there.

word on the street (wiggins and weide) is that the highway going to darrington is closed. so the sauk is out. pilchuck is looking a lil too beefy for me so i'll pass on this round

Hwy 530 to the Sauk is open coming from the Arlington area, but landslides are predicted in the next 24 hours. In short you might get there, but you might not be able to come back. The same is true of Bacon Creek.

What a wonderful day! We had excellent flow (4.5 on the stick gauge). Solid crew of 10.
No wood portages in the upper or middle. The floods really cleaned her up!

Yep, definitely a great day!!! Good to see everyone out there.
Just a little more info on the levels - it was 4.5 on the stick gauge at the takeout. The rock in the middle of the river there had an inch or two running over it. The DOE gauge which swapped over from cfs to feet last week was between 10 and 11 feet.
I know last spring when I ran it the stick gauge was 3.75 and the flow was 1100 cfs. So I'm guessing 1500 cfs today maybe?

Does anyone know how to correlate the new feet gauge for runnable flows? And is there anyone who wants to go again Monday or Tuesday?

Definitely beef jerky! Kind of weird and probably not something that you want in your mouth. Great trip though! It is always neat to get on one of the less frequently run rivers, especially when its such a darn good run and so close to home.

Guess I shouldn't be disappointed to have missed my sampling. Missed the comment on the river, too.
Yeah, guys-definitely a great trip! Way to start off the new year! It was a lot of people but that run was plenty big enough to accomadate everyone with that incredible flow! That falls was way more spectacular than I expected it to be.
It was a good crew. Glad to see so many turn out. I got my Monkey Biz in (my little ledge attainment) and lots of river shreddin! I couldn't believe how much whitewater was packed in that 10 miles! I think this run has been under rated. I mean, I've heard a few paddlers talk highly of it, but usually it gets sandbagged because it has so much class III. I think it's some of the best class III and IV I've run in Wa.

The Pilchuck Creek DOE Gauge has swapped back to CFS. According to the gauge, the flow on Sunday was just under 3k. That seems high to me but I have no proof otherwise.

The DOE gauge is way off somehow, no way was there 3k in there. Your original assumption of 1,500 based off the stick gauge sounds accurate.

I dunno. 2k or slightly more wouldn't surprise me. There was definitely enough current to drive my creekboat. That thing is great if there's enough gravity to make it go, but on runs with less gradient like Pilchuck, the Sky, ect. it takes volume to move that boat in any dynamic way. It certainly wasn't less than 1500 cfs.
hard to say.
