Topic: Washougal wave? Posted: 28 Nov 2011 at 8:12am |
I work in Portland occasionally and am heading down for a few days this week. Someone mentioned that there may be a park and play wave on the Washougal river? Does anyone know where that is and how to get there? Are there any other park and play spots near the PDX area that I can drive to within a half hour distance?
Thanks.

There is a stellar squirt spot on the washougal called the Buffet that is pretty fun. If you have access to a squirt boat check it out!

Someone was just telling me about a playspot on the Washougal - I can't for the life of me remember who it was...
Bob's on the Clack is a little farther than half an hour. Pipeline wave on the lower Sandy might be about 30min away depending on which part of Portland you are in. I think you want something like 3K or lower for it to be good. There is incredible play on the Wilson River but that is more like an 1-1.5 hours away. Worth it though. Bunch of other stuff if you expand your range a bit.

The Sandy is very close to where I stay. I have driven up and down the sandy looking for playspots.
Where is pipeline? I would like to check that out.

I don't know what a good level is and it definitely isn't a destination spot like Bob's but you should check it out since you are right there. There is a trail on river left from the bridge on lusted road at dodge park, its probably a 1/4 mile. Pipeline is the first rapid below Dodge park, right where a big ol pipe crosses the river. Might be easiest to just put in at the park and float down, then walk back up. Pipeline is a class 3 rapid.

The Sandy is running at 4,300cfs right now. I will be going to Dodge park tomorrow afternoon for a quick paddle and hopefully there will be some waves there to surf. I would like to check out the class IV in the upper section someday too.

All the runs on the Sandy are good. The Gorge section is really nice, beautiful and not very difficult, although there are some spots where wood could be pretty bad.
Revenue bridge to dodge park is pretty easy but there is some nice downriver play. The Dodge to Oxbow section is pretty long and there are some very slow bits, but it is also very pretty and there are some good waves to surf here and there. I think it is one of the best beginner runs out there.
Another run to check out is the Bull Run, which is very short and comes into the Sandy right at Pipeline.
You might want to post on PDXkayaker to ask about the trail down to Pipeline. It has been at least 6 years since I was there...

I'm going for sure and will be there around 2pm tomorrow. I have to work and see customers in the morning, then play for a bit.
I am just going to explore and hopefully find a wave to surf in the Dodge park area as I dont have a shuttle set and it will be late in the day.

Ended up at Bob's Hole and it was at a great level. Ran into a local there and ran the section down to Bob's hole. There were some big juicy surfings waves on that section...fun day, even worked most of the day.

The play wave(s) on the Washougal are very nice and have a huge eddy for return service. It's actually a wave train with a few different to choose from. (I've only been there a couple times... and I imagine it changes with different levels, but at around 3-4000 on the Washougal gague it is great).
The playspot is located just a little downstream from the confluence with the N(W)F Washougal. I believe there is access to park and play there, but I don't remember exactly.
If you run the whole NF Washougal run (don't take out at the hatchery) you get to add on this play spot and take out at a bridge over the Washougal just downstream.
