Topic: Moving to Seattle for the summer! Posted: 08 May 2013 at 11:27am |
Allright!
After watching the snow pack all winter and filing application after application, I will be moving to Seattle this summer and working in Tacoma. I was wondering if anyone had any light to shed on
1.) What potential after-work type runs are possible from downtown Tacoma from the end of June until the end of September time range? It looks like the only thing immediately close (as the crow flies) that will have flow might be the Carbon, which seems like a little involved for after work.
2.) My plan currently is to commute from my girlfriend's place in Seattle (Magnolia neighborhood), which I've heard is doable (although an hour one way looks pretty lame to me, but it's for three months, so whatever). Is this crazy?
Summer new run wish-list: Top Tye, Ernie's, Elwha, Carbon, Icicle, Cooper, Cle Elum, Cascade, Thunder, Dosewallops, Ashlu, Rogers.
Stoked!

Dude, you'll make it happen. You may even catch the tail end of the Green if you get here soon enough. You could route up 18 from Tacoma and hit FallInDaWall, again: earlier than later, so you better be ready to hit the ground running. Don't procrastinate. Weekends, of course, offer all kinds of potential. 18 will route you up to Ernies from Tac, as well.

Look south too, Ohanapecosh and Upper Upper Cispus will give you choices late in the season too when most of those other runs are dry.

that sounds like a long commute. though you will be mostly going opposite direction of most of the traffic
check out the sounder train. it typically shuffles people from tacoma to seattle in the morning and back in the afternoon for the rush hour crowd, but i know there are trains going the other way too. bring a bike on and read a book, its a nice ride. i take it whenever i get the chance.
also the bus back and forth is quick and easy too.

It's under 2 hours to get to the Ohane once Chinook opens.
Driving to Ohane
more than 2 hours to Top Tye... without any traffic.
Driving to the Top Tye
Don't understand why folks think the Ohane is so far away, we used to paddle the whole thing twice as long as it is now, when it was wood free and be back in Covington by 5pm (early start though).

Oops I read he was living, not working in Tacoma... so the Ohane is about a half hour farther. It's twice as good...

It will go with rain but once the snow is all gone it will be in the sub 300 cfs bone zone. But it comes back in early fall as we usually get a decent amount of rain that keeps it in at great levels.

I got a run at good flow mid-July in 2012 and in 2011 ran it very low early August. Ernie's usually runs a couple weeks longer than Robe off snowmelt.
Afterwork Carbon runs are pretty involved although they are possible.
